Anyone,

My usually trustworthy M-1 Garand has suddenly developed a situation where the bolt seperates from the op rod. The first time it happened I completely disassembled the rifle, lubed it with gun oil, and reassembled it but the situation returned a few clips later. In both cases the seperation was preceeded by the bolt intermittenly failing to close completely after a round was fired.

Any suggestions?

Most likely a worn tab on the operating rod.
Easiest solution, sight unseen is to replace the operating rod.
I would suggest searching out a newer, late production, rod for shooting.
If you treasure your current rod, or it makes the rifle 'all correct', keep it and use it on the rifle when you're looking at it. HTH

Op Rod

Ditto on the worn tab on the op rod. Now a worst case scenario would be a worn receiver that the op rod tab fits into, but it's possible but not likely. I would look at replacing the op rod first.

Jstreet,

How long have you had this rifle, how many rounds have you fired through it, and WHAT TYPE of ammo do you feed it??

Best regards,

An oprod that dismounts on it's own will quickly get worse. The camming surface on the inside of the hump (where the bolt lug rides) is getting beaten out of shape and will tend to encourage the oprod to depart.

Get a new oprod.

Also, consider the entire rifle.

If it is a CMP purchase, no sweat. If it is not, there is a chance that you might have a rewelded receiver. Check with jouster.com, and fultonarmory.com's FAQ section for more info.

Thanks for your help. The consensus seems to be; replace the op rod which I will do.
