I just ordered a Storm Lake 9mm conversion barrel for my M&P 40 and was wondering if I need to use the M&P 9mm magazines or if the .40S&W/.357SIG mags will work. Anyone have any experience with this?

I looked at their website and couldn't find anything on M&P conversions? Did you call and get the ordering info? Also, did they have a .22 con. for the M&P?
I have been told that there would not be a 9mm or .22lr conversion for M&P's untill the 3rd quarter of the year.

After you get a chance to shoot it, would you report back with results as far as reliability and accuracy?

Finally received my StormLake 9mm conversion barrel. It dropped in just fine and I hand cycled some rounds through it using the .40S&W magazine. Only issue is the slide is locked back with one last round in the mag. Not a real big issue, but I might want to pick up a 9mm magazine. I might need a 9mm recoil spring, but I'll hit the range tomorrow to try it out.

Yep you need the mag, different bullet size, the lips on the mags are different.

I found that to be true when doing something similar with a 45 glock mdl 21 and shooting the 10 mm in it, new barrel and mags.

:):)

Why did you buy the gun, then?

Impulse buy a couple years ago when they were first out. I don't really have trouble shooting the .40S&W, it's just a little "snappy" for me. Since I reload .45 and 9mm, I thought I could get more use out of the gun by switching to the 9mm. I shot it today and I think I will need a 9mm mag 'cause about 3times the next round to be chambered would stove pipe bullet up because the mag feed lips are wider at the front than the 9mm round. The base of the round was held tightly, but the nose popped up. The accuracy was just fine for a combat pistol.

I don't understand the present fad of buying big and shooting small.

Try it you may like it. ;)

This is prolly a stupid Q but dont you have to change the slide also?

Not a stupid question at all, but no you don't need a new slide. Extractor worked great and my loads cycled the slide just fine.

question

Did you say the M&P 40 was a little too snappy for you? The reason I ask is I've been shooting a Glock 40 and am not happy with the "snappy" and I've been told the the SW MP 40 is a whole lot smoother. What do you think?

I have a Glock 35, and a M&P .40.

The M&P doesn't seem to hit my hand as hard. I'd say that it means it fits my hand better.

Your results may be different.

I'm a handloader and can make my .45 what I want it to. Including kinder and gentler shooting.

The slide would have to be changed if he was going from the 9mm up to the .40. Because the nine has a smaller opening on the slide and is more prone to jam. However, going down he does not need to because .40 slide has a bigger opening. anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Just the Q&As I've been looking for :)

Great that you posted this question. I‘ve been looking for this information for a while and the most I ‘be been able to get is educated guesses. I’m thinking of getting an M&P 40 and get a 9mm barrel for when I run out of reloads or find really cheap 40s. But I’m hoping to save on magazines. 5-6 mags would cost me an additional $200 ( = 2 cases of cheap 9mm ammo).

When your rounds FTF because of the magazine lips, did you try to tighten them a little closer? Perhaps just a little so the 9mm feeds reliably, but not so much that the 40s would then dive onto the bottom of feeding ramp.

Please let me know if you tried tinkering with the magazines at all.

Thanks!
