I do not mean to impose that everyone's mag drop has been caused the same way. However here are my details.

I have an M&P 40 full size. I had put about 200 rounds through it and the magazine began to fall out after every shot. I called up S&W, they agreed to send me a new mag catch. While waiting for it to arrive, I had a previously planned family shooting engagement, so I flipped the catch to the other side. You could see the top was visibly worn.

This weekend I shot 150 rounds through it. I received the mag catch in the mail and replaced it.

Here is how bad the wear on the tab on the old catch is. According to my handy desk ruler (sorry, not at my perm residence so I can't mic it) it was originally ~ 1mm thick. Through 350 rounds, the edge has been tapered down to be ~ .6mm thick.

Since I don't know what the first side looked like, I couldn't say it wasn't tapered from the factory. But I do know the second side had no taper when I flipped it around the otherday and now it has a taper which goes down about .15 mm.

It is clear that the metal tab has hardness issues compared to the hardness of the magazine. I am really surprised S&W has overlooked this!

I am going to put some more rounds through it and see how the new mag catch is wearing (I suppose I could sit here and just take the mag in and out, but I don't want to not be able to shoot it!).
