I just bought a good used M&P 9C and the thumb safety is too easy to engage or disengage. I want the safety and don't want to remove it. I've heard that they can be tightened but haven't seen how. Any good recommendations out there?

I don't have a recommendation, but I do think most of the controls on the M&P are pretty sloppy.

I just bought the M&P 9c this past week end at a gun show. Mine does not have that problem and it is fine compact size pistol. I put 200 rounds through it here at my farm range over the week end with no problems.

Call S&W at 1-800-331-0852 and they will tell you what to do. They are an excellent company with very good customer service.

Thank you for the suggestion Snooperman.

I just called and the customer service person just gave me his opinion as to what I might do rather than a specific fix to take care of it. I asked if there was anyone else that might know the specifics and he said that they've never had the complaint before.

I've seen complaints in several places as I did a google search. But no remedies.

What was his suggestion? I can not believe that it can't be remedied or made a little stiffer.

I'm afraid I don't remember the specific suggestion. All I kept hearing was,"you might try... or you might try...". Nothing definitive.

ive handled dozens of them over the years in many of the lgs, and i've never seen a firm one yet that wasn't weak and sloppy. one of the few things i don't like is a way to easy to switch off by accident safety. i like a safety but when i bought my m&p40 i went no safety since it's basically a terrible one, imho.

They don't have a "definitive fix" because it isn't seen as a problem.

The thumb safety is a "check the box" offering to meet possible contract requirements, the vast majority of M&Ps don't have the thumb safety. The largest demand in the non-LE market is from folks who are used to the 1911 and are more comfortable withan index for their strong thumb.

The reason that they ask to to try different things is because, without the gun in hand, they can't tell where the looseness is.

I do believe there is a spring|detent that be made firmer as well as reshaping the detent.

I'm also pretty sure that I have saved a powerpoint file on my pc that could be used.

Go here and download the files. They don't show the thumb safety but it shows how to get to it. When you take it apart it will be apparent which spring to address and what I'm saying.

I have the M&P 9c with the thumb safety too. I think it's on the soft side too but it was too big as well. I shrank mine.;)

For the OP, here's a link to the detent ball and spring for only $10 in stock.

As I mentioned, some have used a small file to change the shape of the detent. It would be easy to do.

Others have just taken out the spring and stretched it a little and they seemed to be happy.

I remember reading once that S&W changed the spring from the early ones. I have no idea if that's true.

I also felt it was light initially but the size of the thumb lever is huge IMO. I got a couple extras from S&W and then files one down on both left and right side and the other lever I sanded the left side down and the right side I REALLY made smaller. Its still functional if I was a lefty but I may take the right side off completely one day one that lever.
