M&P warranty only 1 year??????

One reason I recently bought a M&P 9c was the lifetime warranty I read about (many places have said this). The back of of my manual says 1 year. I'm going to e-mail S&W but their web sight is down right now. Does anyone know the story on this?

I shouldn't speak, since I don't know for sure - but I would guess the one year is for parts coverage and the lifetime is for free service of parts that you would have to buy. I just ordered a M&P 40 and it said lifetime service warranty. But, once again, I am just guessing at this point.
 
Yes, there is a one year warranty, but it goes on to say this:

The EXTENDED SERVICE POLICY begins after the warranty period has expired. Smith & Wesson will repair, without charge, any handgun purchased by the original owner on or after February 1, 1989 that is found to have a defect in material or workmanship. Eligibility for this extended service policy requires returning the Product Registration Card within 30 days of purchase. The Extended Service Policy covers functional defects; it does not include the handgun's finish, grips, magazines or sights. The Extended Service Policy is in addition to and not an extension of the Smith & Wesson Warranty.

Did you see that in a compact manual? I read the warranty section again and it does have anything about a extended service policy. ??????
 
It's not in my manual for the gun I bought last week. I hope they didn't change the warranty.
 
dshowan, when S&W site is back up, load up the manual they have and see what it says, could have just been laft out in your version? Also call them, I have heard good things about S&W CS lately.

Thank you for the reply. But, I am not sure what you are saying. Are you saying that any problems/defects that occur after 1 year are covered? How can I notify you of any defects within 1 year if they show up after one year?

So I guess I'm covered, but the wording sure is strange. I think S&W will honor a lifetime warranty in most cases but it is no longer stated in the manual - at least not mine.

Those would be things like blowing it up with faulty reloads or other obvious neglect or abuse. For just about anything else you will be covered.
 
I'd rather deal with a company that didn't put a lifetime warranty in writing and took good care of you if you have a problem, than a company that offers a lifetime warranty and is a pain to deal with or goes out of business.
By the way - My M&P9c is a great gun.
 
S&W, Glock, and most of the other major manufacturers only offer a one year written warranty, but will take care of you anytime should you encounter a problem. In their manuals Ruger openly states that they don't offer a written warranty because of the complex legal requirements of the Magnusson-Moss warranty act. This act is the same reason very few gun manufacturers offer a written lifetime warranty.

Don't worry though. In the rare circumstance you have an issue S&W will take care of you.
 
I'm curious about this too. I bought an M&P rifle and it stated 1 year warranty in the manual. I have a non-spec lower, so does this mean I can contact the warranty department and get it fixed even though it's been over a year (not sure if M&P covers both pistols and rifles)??
 
Chris, call S&W service. The worst they can say is that you'll have to pay for the fix since you're beyond the written warranty period. I'd be shocked if they don't care of you though; particularly on such a new product line.
