Here we have the newest addition to my fleet. It is an M&P40 FS. It is a police trade-in from the Detroit Police Dept. Although it's a police trade, it is brand new in box. It is in pristine, new condition, and has never been fired but for the factory test round. It has Trijicon night sights that still glow as bright as the ones on a Sig I bought less than a year ago. It came in a nice plastic S&W case/box which is larger than the usual S&W boxes I have seen. In the box was everything that comes with a brand-new gun: 3 mags, 2 additional palm swells, test casing in envelope, all original manuals and warranty registration card. The date on the test-fire casing envelope is 1-12-2010, which suggests that the gun is about 6 years old. The serial number is part of a unique series that begins with "DTWXXXX". The gun still has the original packing grease so I will be field stripping and cleaning it before I go to the range this weekend.

I bought the gun from Bud's for $399.00. On it's face that's a good deal considering what a new one with night sights and the third mag would cost. I'm not a big fan of .40 caliber (all my other guns are 9mm or .45); I bought it mainly because I live in the greater Detroit area and I just thought it would be cool to own one. The trigger is typical M&P: gritty take-up, heavy break (probably necessary in a police gun), and marginal reset. After I run a few hundred rounds through it to see what's what, I suspect it will be getting some Apex love.

Of the police trade-ins @ Bud's, I've noticed a MASSIVE amount of .40S&W stuff. I can only assume this is some way influenced by the FBI shifting back to 9mm; other agencies follow suit. Anybody know if there are other reasons? Thanks!

Agencies tend to trade in their guns on regular intervals anyways, and most departments use .40S&W. As a result virtually all police trade-ins from the last 10-12 year have been .40S&W.

Bud's Police Trades

I have 2 S & W M & P 40s-A FS 40 & A 40 C. Both are police trade ins and not unissued. The 40 C has very light holster wear but no sign it was fired much. The full sized 40 has zero holster wear and no sign of much shooting at all. I paid the used price on both guns. I believe the 40C was issued but really never fired because the rear sights were off about 4 inches at 7 yards and still locktited. They both came from Bud's in the last 8 months. They have a few 9s FS available at a higher price. I believe the full sized 40 was either unissued or used by a desk jockey. It is that good and it shows no signs of being carried or fired very much. The test cartridge is dated 2009 and the night sights are dead.
