I was on gunbroker and saw an ad by gt distributors for m&p40 used by the atlanta pd for only $379 night sights 3 mags and grips included. What i wanna know is has anyone heard any bad or negative about the m&p issued to atlanta. So i can justify buying it.. and why did atlanta pd switch from m&p to glock...

Considering you can pick up a brand new M&P for not much more, I would pass on the PD trade. I don't know about the Atlanta versions but I know that other dept guns have a much heaiver trigger than what S&W is putting in the latest models which IMO is great trigger.

New M&Ps run anywhere from $475-$550 WITHOUT night sites. Assuming the night sites are still bright on these things, you could be looking at a decent deal. Condition will be a big factor here, however I have bought several police trade ins before and they all showed up in decent cosmetic condition, with very little indication of having been fired much. The large majority of the cops I have known fire their weapons very rarely at the range other than yearly qualifications.

politics and money are the main reasons PD's switch weapons. It has little to do with the name on the slide.

Exactly. Glock's US headquarters, manufacturing, and distribution are located in Smyrna, GA, which is a northwestern Atlanta suburb that sits just outside the I-285 loop in Cobb county. There was no way Glock wasn't going to do whatever it took to get Atlanta PD carrying their guns after losing out to S&W the first time when APD switched to the M&P from the discontinued S&W 5906 and 5906 TSW.

I've had very, very good luck with police trade-ins personally. They're a great way to save money on a gun with a little holster wear but that has been fired relatively little (but has usually been maintained by an armorer).

I'd buy without hesitation.

I would never buy a LE trade-in sight unseen. BTW, they're selling these locally for $359.

Our local PD really wanted to buy the M&P 3 years ago. But the samples set could not pass the testing and evaluation. They had multiple issues with the guns and finally gave up on it and moved on to the Glock.

Some of the 5906's they replaced had been in service for over 20 years and the chief really wanted to stay with S&W. In this case Glock was fighting an uphill battle from a chief who commented that he would never allow a Glock in his department. In spite of that the Glock ended up being the only logical choice when tested side by side.

I don't know why the Atlanta PD is dumping their guns after such a short time, but I'd be very concerned.

The one feature that M&P has that no other off-the-shelf semi auto has is the ambidextrous slide lock. This really isn't a big deal. Well, unless you are left handed and need to perform a one handed malfunction clearance requiring you to lock the slide back or are right handed and need to perform the same task with your left hand because your left hand is injured in a fight. If either of those are a concern, then the M&P (More Perfect) might be the "perfect" choice.

Smyrna GA?.....

Does the fact that Glock's US offices are in Syrma GA have anything to do with it?

GA's upscale Sandy Springs uses the Glock.
I think the GA State Patrol & elite GBI also pack Glocks. The GBI does criminal investigations & FBI type stuff at the state level.

I owned 02 M&Ps. They are fine. I like the ambi safety styles with no magazine safety designs. I might get a new .40S&W M&P then carry it on security jobs in 9x19mm. I'd buy a 9x19mm conversion barrel.
My state limits the calibers/types of guns you can tote on duty. I plan to get my .45acp certification then add 9x19mm. I prefer 9mm over .40S&W because I want to carry sub compact/compact CCW guns on EP details or "plain-clothes" posts.

I have purchased 3 firearms from GT Distributors

and all three are great guns at great prices.

I glanced at the APD trade ins as recently as Wednesday. Did not touch them but in the case they looked cosmetically great with no visible wear. Personally no interested in .40 so I did not pick up.

I purchased a M&P .45 about a year ago there and its awesome but with a rough trigger. Plan on doing the APEX upgrade someday. My .45 is a police trade in to and the night sights were only about 5 years old so they glow nicely.

You want me to go in and pick one out for you on Monday?
Seriously! Just dont get mad at me if you end up not liking it.

Oh by the way I live close to the Rossville Georgia store so you would have to get one from their inventory for me to check out.

Make that 4 hand guns I have purchased at GT

I forgot about the SR9c civilian trade in customers wife didnt like it. Brand new, factory complete stolen by me @ $289

Also a S&W model 15-4 police confiscation, Manatee County FL. $250 not original grips sadly and some wear on the finish but someone did a nice trigger job.

A service Beretta 92 police trade in from Manatee County FL. $275 no mags no box no ppwk, heavily used but not abused. Just an okay deal as it starts to cycle sluggish after about 200 rounds.

And lastly the M&P 45 police trade in from Valdosta PD Georgia. $439 complete with case, and everything from factory. Apparently not fired much at all.

Atlanta PD here.....

From my understanding the big reason we made the switch to Glock was the inability to obtain replacement parts for the M&P's in a timely manner. The M&P's were okay, I wish I had bought mine, that's a good price. If I remember correctly that's the same price we were able to buy our duty weapons for if we wanted them. As you probably know, the triggers are sloppy but easily fixed. Another issue I saw, was the slide stop / release levers would break clean off pretty frequently on high use guns. Mine was probably one of the higher round count guns and I personally broke the slide release lever off mine. The vast majority of them probably have less than 1k rounds through them, as most police don't train very often.

Be advised, all of the APD M&P's will have the magazine disconnect, so the weapon will not fire with the magazine removed.

What stopped me from buying a Pro earlier this year was all the comments about getting replacement parts. It seems the strikers do have some problems but are pretty inexpensive to order if you ever get one. I've also read other posts about he slide catches needing replaced after x amount of rounds.

Which reminds me I need to source a striker replacement for my Shield.

But still I'd jump on the PD trade in at that price, if you want a full sized M&P.

Huh?

I can think of plenty of off-the shelf semi-auto pistols that have ambi controls for the slide release, including the FN FNS (which is both made in Columbia, SC and used by the Columbia Police Department - where your user info says you are located), Walther PPQ and P99AS (Defense Kit Version), HK VP9, P30, HK45, etc, etc.
