i am looking for a concealed carry pistol, and i have got it down to 2 that i really like.
my local gun shop has the following
S&W M&P40c ($545)
Springfield Commander milspec ($459 + bobtail job $150 give or take)

now i have a sti 1911 and i love it, i can carry it inside the waist band in the small of my back well, but it is heavy and uncomfortable and i have to take it off to drive/sit comfortably.
so im leaning to the commander 1911 cause of that (lighter and the bob tail will make it much more discrete)

...but the M&P 40c fits my hand SO GOOD and it shoots just as straight as the 1911 for me! and it has 12 rounds vs 7 and is much lighter... yet its a little fatter than the 1911 and might not hide as well

so im stuck. i love the sexy look of the 1911 and it is a super reliable tried and true platform, but this new polymer framed weapon has nothing but good reviews and it shoots a little "softer" (thats an self opinion 40S&W lovers dont give me a balistics chart telling me 40 is not haha)

so you'd pick a heavier gun that doesn't shoot any better that holds 5 less rounds as a carry gun, simply because it looks prettier? really?

unless you feel the m&p would be too difficult to hide as opposed to the 1911, honestly, you'd be pretty daft to go for the 1911.

use what you want at the range, but use your brain in selecting what you carry. prettiness doesn't matter one whit. i carry a g27. ugly as ****, and i don't care.

well if you read the bottom i said that the 1911 is more reliable from my experience. so no its not all about looks.
plus it is 45 acp
plus it is thinner
plus i have a lot more experience with a 1911

does anyone have both and have a preference?

Do you use a holster?

By "small of the back," do you mean right over your spine? If you go holsterless (very bad idea) and place the gun over your spine, (another very bad idea) then no wonder it's not comfortable.

Based on your post, if you can hide a 1911, you can hide the M&P-C, so go with the Smith. BUT USE A HOLSTER!

ha i do use a inside the waist band holster, sorry for leaving out the details, but in the small of my back is the only place i can carry in a t-shirt with the 1911 but i think that goes with all handguns.

i know that some police forces use the full sized M&P is there anyone who knows where i can get a used one that might be sold for cheap? or any other decommissioned auto sidearms for that matter?

Go with the 1911, because that is what you are familiar with. If you feel like trying something new as mentioned above get the M&P40c and add an Apex hard sear and firing pin block.

A write up and links to those parts can be found here. Basically what those parts do is they fix the terrible factory trigger pull that plagues all models of the S&W M&P lineup.

I own an M&P9c, full size 1911 and a CC size 1911, and have shot the full size M&P 45. I liked all of those guns and I think you should either just try something new if that is what you are looking for or stick whith what you know.

Which carry

Hello, I'm ft 8in and 158lbs I carry a MP-9c in a IWB holster . ITS not a problem, I do wear my shirts on the outside.
The MP9 is a well made gun, mine came from the factory with a high polish feed ramp, the machining inside was very smooth, the white dot sights are a little bigger than some, helps my OLD eyes. It holds 12 rounds.
As far as the trigger goes its just over 5 1/2 lbs ,it has smoothed out after 200 rds, I can put a "APEX" sear [$29.00] in it to lower pull down to around 4 lbs.. I got this for defense, not target shooting, I may not change the sear! Just my 2 cents.
