Went to the range this afternoon with my M1 it turns 52 next month so It was an early birthday shoot. Had the Korean PMC ammo and started shooting off the bench at 100 yards. Groups were 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Let my Dad shoot it, he was shooting 2" groups. Offhand I was shooting 2-3"groups at 100yards. I LOVE THIS RIFLE!!!! We were outshooting modern rifles with scopes on them. I am just amazed that after 52 years with cheap surplus ammo it will do this. Just wanted to brag too. I hear lots of people get CMP Garands that do 4"or 5" . I really lucked out I guess.

You & your dad gave a fine display of

Excellant shooting! Kudos and enjoy.

I know the feeling. Mine just turned 50 this year and will still shoot 2" groups at 100 yards. What a rifle!

Extraordinary. Really, really, really amazing. Save the target and put the rifle up or sale on jouster.com. A J.C. Garand match legal [as-issued] Garand that can shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yards with milsurp ammo is worth at least $1,000 , maybe more.

I'm not selling, It was bought with birthday money, so its kinda a present. Plus its mine. It does have an uncut op rod, and I'm thinking of pulling it off and saving it. I kept the targets but left my camera in a truck on Friday. hopefully I'll get it back by next weekend. The rifle is all Springfield, service grade.

Well, think about it, because it is a rare - extraordinary - absolutely amazing - that an as-issued Garand that can put 8 rounds into 2.5", let alone 1.5", especially with most people getting 4" or more with the Korean ammo.

Awesome

Man that's awesome. Never, never, never, sell that rifle. Nothin' like a good shootin' M-1 and some en-blocs on a cold, frosty morning to get the blood flowing.

I thought this feat was so impressive - and so unprecedented - that I posted your message verbatim on a High Power shooters forum. Here's one response after asking if it was indeed possible for a stock Garand to shoot 1" or 1.5" groups at 100 yards.

Sure it's "possible"! It's "possible" if you only talk about a single "3-shot group" out of the 10 you fired and "redact" the 2 or 3 "flyers" that weren't significant anyway! That way, any mil-surp xxxxxx can magically become a 1.5 MOA Match Rifle!

Truth be told, it takes a LOT of work and money to get ANY rifle to shoot a true, statistically valid, 1.5 MOA! .......

BTW, after thoroughly checking and shooting five CMP Garands to find the most accurate one for match use, the best 8 round group I had using the excellent Danish AMA 91 ammo was 2.3". I had several three round groups that were less than an inch - but when you shoot eight (a clipload) or even five, a service grade rifle is going to move.

This target is 8 rounds from a VAR barreled Garand that demonstrates the point. Note (4) nice and close - and the others danced. Before anyone gets excited, let me point out that this was shot at 50 yards - this would have been 3.5" at 100. But sure, three rounds would have been an inch or so, perhaps. Any CMP Service Grade rifle that can shoot under 3" groups with milsurp ammo off a bench at 100 yards is exceptional.

I fired numerous 3 shot groups. I didn't know that it didn't count if you didn't fire the entire clip. In themilitary we fired 3 shot groups with a M16 so that is what I have always done. If anyone thinks this is deceptive, I never intended it to be that way. I fired 3 shots ,looked through the spotting scope, moved to a different part of the target and fired 3 more. Out of 8 groups this way, 6 had groups under or at 1 1/2 inches. Of the other 2 one was around 2 and one I called a flyer because my contac was drying out and I rushed the shot. I did not post this to say how great I was as a shot because it was off the bench with sandbags and not freehanded. I have shot 2 and 3 inch groups with this rifle before but this is the first time I really measured, because we were compating it to another modern rifle we were sighting in. I have no reason to lie about it, I will never sell it and will probably never shoot in a competition. I just shoot for myself and the joy of putting holes in a target. So, I think I'm just a lucky guy with a nice rifle. BTW. when I got it in, I took it to a gunsmith here in town to check it out. He told me the timing was off and it wouldn't eject a clip and that the throat erosion was at a 5. I called CMP and they said ship it back. I boxed it up and was going to but decided to take it to the range first to double check. Needless to say it works flawlessly and I won't use that gunsmith again.
