M1 Carbine clean load

cleanest powder ?

hmmmm ... I have used very few powders. Currently I am using Alliant 2400 with my .30 carbine reloads. I used W296 at first, but I think it is too fine to work with ... a primer fails to seat, and I got W296 all over everything ... very annoying. I just like the way the 2400 meters and it shoots just fine in my carbine.

IMR4227 with Speer 110 grain HP's and regular small rifle primers. 13.0 to 15.0(compressed) I don't use milspec anything though. Military ball isn't accurate enough. The load I use runs at around 1800fps.

Sunray:

What I am looking for is a clean load that makes milspec velocity of 1800-2000 fps with a 110gr jacketed bullet and is not temperature sensitive. Many ball powders are temp sensitive. Because of the M1 gas system I want minimum fouling in the gas piston.

So far, I think Vitavouhri 110 may be the best with Hodgen 110 a close second: Winchester 296 has been also recommended. I plan to use CCI Milspec 41 primers to prevent slamfires. These are mag primers that are less sensitive than CCi 450.

It looks like Winchester 296 might be a candidate. Even though the ballistics look good, I have heard 2400 is a bit dirty and the gas system on the M1 carbine is not designed to be cleaned regularly.

Being an engineer, I am a stickler for trying to adhere to the designer's requirements for power etc.

By the way: I just shot a 10rd group off the bench with a CMP carbine using irons at 25yds that was under 3/4" and my eyes are not that good anymore. Ammo was Federal American Egale 110gr FMJ.

I am very impressed with this little rifle.
