I've had a Carbine(NRA) since being dischared after Korea(AirForce). Would
like to clean up the stock but not refinish, leave it original. Heard that Mineral
spirits were good for this. Does anyone have a comment or better method?
This is a good place to find out info. - the C&R Rifle Stock Cleaning and Rifle Preservation Forum. I know they've recommended Lacquer Thinner or Acetone for such jobs. I've used Lacquer Thinner on various milsurp stocks and it works well.
Good luck with your project. I'm in the middle of cleaning up an Enfield Mk.4 No.1. I cleaned the stock with lacquer thinner and gave it several coats of Behr's Tung Oil as recommended on the C&R Rifle Stock forum. I assume you're familar with M1 Carbine disassembly, if not here's a good link;
