M1 Carbine

Hello wonderful members of THR, I have an M1 Carbine that I would like some information on if anyone has it.

I have attached some pictures, it is a .30 Caliber and I am told is made by Universal (I have not seen it yet this is a friend's).

Any information would be appreciated, I've done some searches and haven't found a whole lot.

Lastly, if anyone has some ball park figures on what it may be worth I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Universal M1 Carbines are generally seen as not very valuable. They are not a true M1 Carbine. Parts are not interchangeable between a Universal Carbine and a true M1 Carbine.

Universal made commercial M-1 Carbine clones back in the 80's maybe.
Early ones used mostly GI surplus parts with a cast receiver made by Universal.
Later, as real GI parts ran out, they started making thier own parts, including a cast operating rod with two recoil springs instead of one.

They varied all over the place in quality.
Some worked just fine, and many more didn't.
Some will accept most GI issue replacement parts, but some won't.

I don't know what the value would be, but it would not be nearly as much as a real GI issue M-1 Carbine if I were looking to buy one.

If the guy will let you shoot & function test it to make sure it works reliably, I might go $300 for one in really good condition.

On the otherhand, I have passed over a bunch of them through the years for less then that.

I appreciate the info. That was my suspicion that it was a lesser quality type. I don't know a lot about M1's though

I bought my Universal M1 Carbine from Sears mail order catalog prior to 1972.

I remember it was $69.95 plus shipping and 4% sales tax.
More than one whole paycheck.
Ugly blond wood on the stock, but it shot well.

In all these years it has never failed to shoot well, no failures at all.

By the way, I also have the patented Universal scope mount.
It's a side mount on the left side of the receiver, which is factory drilled/tapped for it.
The stock has a recess carved out for the mount,
with a plastic filler that snaps into the recess when not using the scope mount.

The scope mount is a cheap aluminum piece, painted black. Not much to it.
I think I had to order it from the Universal factory in Florida for something like 5 bucks.
