I'm considering the mildly heretical idea of getting an M1 Carbine and slapping a red dot sight of some kind on it for home defense. The best solution would probably involve mounting the dot sight on an Ultimak forward rail, but I'm curious as to whether there are any reflex sights that would sit low enough to cowitness with the irons (lower 1/3rd or absolute cowitness would both be fine) if set up like that.

Does anyone know for sure whether or not this is possible?

saw, chisel, file, shape, sand, drill, drill.

anything is possible but i question the worth. in a home SD situation if actual shooting is happening you are holding a short bbl rifle at close objects in a likely fast and fluid action defined by narrow halls and in rooms of not great size. you have, what 20 rounds?
point and shoot.....

The sights as-is barely clear the top of the handguard so you will not find any modern sight that will co-witness.

I've done what you are considering..dropped an extra carbine action in a choate folding stock, added a rail on the bottom so the surefire grip lite would mount. Need to get the ultimak rail so I can add my EOtech to it...as-is its handy and points well. I've decided that the only thing I might add is an aftermarket recoil check to keep the muzzle down.

I have an Aimpoint mounted with an Ultimak mount on one of my carbines.

It's a VERY slick set up. It doesn't add much weight, so the gun is still fast handling, and target acquisition is very quick.

I can't see any way to get the iron sights to cowitness though.

I don't have access to an Aimpoint Mico or I'd try that.
