I have been a steady and satisfied customer of Cheaper Than Dirt for several years. Today I had my first disappointment. I had ordered, among other things, their "M1 Garand 8-Rd Metal Stripper Clips, Package of 20 Clips .30/06 Speedloader".

The catalog description is: "Manufacturer: Leapers - Mfr# MAG2461

This is a Garand stripper clip or speedloader. Holds 8 rounds and fits inside the rifle. For use in the M1 Garand chambered in .30/06. Once the clip has been emptied, it automatically ejects from the rifle with their own trademark "ching" sound. We sell these as a package of 20 clips, and they can be reused dozens of times. Imported"

You pretty much don't want to buy these and I should have known better. At their website was a customer review that I neglected to read:

"I wasn't impressed, 12/31/2006
Reviewer: SithLord
I ordered a set to check them out - seemed like a good price - 5 of the 20 were warped beyond use, and the rest of them didnt' hold the rounds tight like they should. I didn't have any malfunctions to speak of, but i'll be sticking to the GI ones from now on."

I just left a similar review. The clips were warped and varied in width. I gave mine away "as is" to a friend rather than use them. No hard feelings with CTD, though. They do have customer reviews posted and I should have read it. To their credit...my order got fouled up and delayed and it took an email and phone call to straighten it out. They surprised me on the invoice with the shipping ($12.75) credited back to my MasterCard. So I'm not out any money.

So. I feel better for venting a little. Just wanted to share this with fellow THR-er's (the one's who don't read customer reviews like me) so that you don't buy these clips. Overall, I still give CTD a thumbs up.

(I can call these clips, right? :uhoh: )

I'll second what Harry has said. I sell Leapers as part of my line and for the most part, they're really good products. They do have a few dogs though, and unfortunately the Garand clips are one of them. After similar complaints from my customers, I no longer sell them. The company is aware of the issue, so we may see an improvement in quality soon. They're really taking their products seriously lately and improving quality in a number of areas.

They only hold the ammo on three sides, do not enclose it completely and have no integral feed or push mechanism, therefor "clip" is appropriate.

For what it's worth the clips came in a white paper box wrapped in plastic with only "Made in China" printed on a label. No Leapers ID on the box at all.

With made in China dog food protein contaminated with melamine(sp?)
to up the nitrogen test content (and cause kidney failure in pets)
you think we would learn something about "Made in China" and
contracting out to the lowest bidder.

CTD or TAPCO had a problem with the chinese made en bloc's about a year or two ago as reported on many boards. In a word, they are JUNK. Nothing against CTD or TAPCO, just that the clips were junk. I bought two boxes of them and they are still sitting in a corner upstairs.

There is an easy solution. Buy the greek HXP ammo loaded wth the clips ready to go from CMP. One case and you have near a lifetime supply.

One case and you have near a weekend supply....maybe

Not ammo silly, clips. I reuse my clips. Each case has 96 clips. Or you can just keep buying the Greek ammo with the clips in it. It does not cost much more than the LC ammo and is just as good.

I can't find the link, so I'm going to be guilty of "I read somewhere"...

I believe there is a minor dimensional difference between the Greek clips and G.I. clips, corresponding to the slight change the Greek ammo shows at the brass forward of the rim.

If I'm remembering this correctly, there can be difficulties getting standard (US mfd) brass to fit the Greek clips. No problem if you reload the HXP, as this brass fits the Greek clips.

I believe the "retaining ridge" is a little farther forward.

The HXP brass is supposed to fit G.I. clips, so this is a "one-way" problem.

What I can't remember is the explanation for why the Greeks decided to change the geometry of the .30-06 brass.

And, since I can't find the link to confirm this, I'm not even sure it's true.

I have some S&B brass in a handful of greek en bloc clips right now. Never had a problem with them holding or cycling.

I have loaded USGI surplus ball in greek clips with no issues. The greek clips seem a little thicker overall, just a tad, and the parkerizing is a bit rougher than the couple GI ones I have, but they work fine in my M1s.

YMMV

I sell Leapers as part of my line and for the most part, they're really good products.

I'll second that. I had a $60 3-9x40 scope from them that's better than some scopes costing 2 or 3 times as much. It makes many $200 scopes look bad. They also have some of the only affordable cases designed to fit scoped AK's and AR's, and the absolute ONLY single-rifle case I've seen able to fit an SVD or PSL with the scope attached. To fit one of these rifles, you need at least 11 inches of height and 43 inches of length. Their largest case gives 13" and 46".

I'm honestly a bit surprised they messed up the Garand stripper clips. Oh well.

yup, CTD has two versions of the Embloc clip on their site, you want to order the MAG-246 ones. They are US made.

I have had ZERO problems with the set I ordered.

This is a Garand stripper clip
Never heard of a Garand stripper clip. Enbloc clips are NOT stripper clips. Strippers are used to hold rounds while they are stripped off it and into a magazine, hence the name. Enbloc clips merely hold the rounds while the whole clip is inserted into the magazine. I could never understand why this is so common a mistake. I've even seen Carcano clips called strippers when they are indeed enbloc in every sense of the word. Rant off.

Lots of variation in the en bloc clips. My particular Garand (Blue Sky, ex-Korean) loves the Greek clips. A friend's hates them. My retainer must be sharper than his.

The aftermarket clips I've bought were terrible. The real ones are so cheap; just use real ones.

If they are the Greek clips with rough parkerizing on them tell your friend just to smooth the outside of the clip with a Scotch-Brite pad. Works for a lot of people.

I've shot several thousand rounds of HXP and have gotten enblocs from the US, Germany, Denmark, Italy, France, the Netherlands and some others. Plus some Greek clips. And yes the HXP rim relief is different than USGI .06. The HXP rim is the same as the 7.62X51 rim cutout I believe.

i have noticed differences in the case head and rim when reloading them.

all my hpx fits in my single stage shell holders just fine, but in my shell plate on my progressive press, the hpx are much tighter, with some being so much trouble fitting i just toss them.
