OK--I've been looking everywhere for a nice new op rod. Mine is so bent that it touches the wood on the side channel of my forend wood. My Garand is not a collector piece (1944 Springfield--but a Blue Sky Import), so I do not need a particular op rod--just a nice new one.

Where can I get one?

Thanks.

I must admit that I am a novice at Garand smithing, but why can't the rod simply be bent back to where there is no interference. I could understand if the tube was kinked, and the metal weakened, but the rod has angles incorporated in the original shape. My book on Garands mentions bending the rod to eliminate contact.

Bending oprods is dicey an not for the faint of heart. You are changing the fit at three different places. The arsenals had a very elaborate jig to do this.

Are you sure it's the oprod that's out and not something else (barrel timing, gas cyl splines, barrel splines or upper band)?

Even a new rod can require fitting. I'd send it out to someone that can tune it.

I know DGR has a bunch of reserviced oprods on hand. You may want to give Dean a call to see if he'll do a cash and trade for one.

There is a guy out there somewhere named Jim Swartz who rebuilds and re-bends M1 op-rods to the correct curves. He has a set of the original GI bending jigs. Reports of his work are all positive.

Sorry, can't locate contact info. Maybe somebody else reading this will post it.

Best,
Swampy

For those of us who don't know the difference, how could you tell if it was something else?

I had to replace an op rod in a CMP M1 I bought several years ago. It wouldn't cycle right and my Dad helped me catch on to the fact that the Op Rod was bent. I bought one at a gun show, replaced it, and it works just fine. I think the prices are a little higher for parts now. I have 2 more CMP Garands now, but neither has such problems.
