Nothing wrong with the Field Grades. I have two luck-of-the-draw CMP rifles, a Field Grade and a Service Grade and I can't tell them apart by appearance or accuracy.
Some of the field grades looked a heck of a lot better than the collector or correct grades.

Strange that but I guess the part numbers mean more than condition to the collectors.
Thanks Tinpig, Mike. That's real good to hear, I'm just looking for a shooter.

Looks have nothing to do with it. I shoot that collectors grade. Shoots better than any other Garand in the collection.

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to check out the CMP or just get one at the gun store. I'd say the one at Big 5 was field grade, if that, and they're selling it for $800. Looks like a rip off after seeing the table JHansenAK47 was kind enough to post.

Happygeek, one thing to keep in mind is that if you have any problems, CMP will make it right, even with their "no warranty" statement. I doubt any place has customer service as good as CMP does.

So true. The only complaint I ever hear is that it takes longer than promised to get rifles sometimes.

CZ Guy not to bust your bubble but it is a Greek import. CMP went over them and you do not have an unissued gun. You have a gun in very nice condition and you should enjoy it. The stock is not USGI to my eyes.

Sticking fingers in my ears and closing eyes tightly............I can't hear you. :neener:

There, my bubble is still intact. :D

rellascout and NC-Mike, why don't we start a new thread called "trivial arguing", and rella I think you have harassed him enough for one day...Come on guys...lets play nice. :)

I did try to avoid it...

I never asked what the difference is between a careful restoration to correct and a CMP collector grade and how you would have to have a Garand PHD to tell the difference.

I love the CMP but they didn't make the M1. They sell surplus M1's and put a label on em.

Labels don't mean much to me. :)

I realize that you were only defending yourself and your objective was not to mislead; I am just trying to keep it on point in the hopes that happygeek will be able to get some more worthwhile information...not just a pointless argument. Just wanted to add that there is a great deal of good information here and I don't want to see the thread closed. :)

back on track......

you really can't go wrong with a CMP rifle and its worth the trip to either store to go pick one out of the 100 that are on the racks. i recommend getting a good book on them and read it, otherwise you will have no idea what you are looking at. i was just at the south store a month ago if anyone has any questions.

As far as I know the CMP's don't have Service Grades available on the racks or for order, according to their website and what was in the South store (at least as of early this month).

At the South store, I found Field Grades that are in excellent mechanical condition but none in the cosmetic shape of those pictured in this thread. Mine was one of the best as picked picked out from a small group recommended by a CMP employee who was attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful; first-class all the way. I don't think you'll find field grades in the condition attributed to the Service Grades no longer available.

Now, if somehow I am mistaken and Service Grades have come back around the price difference is more than worth it, as it didn't look like there were any field grades of similar condition left. For $500 I got an excellent shooter, but if you're willing to wait I believe the quality of field grade you'll receive will be the best of what's available and seemingly better than what's on the racks. If you go, you can be sure the staff will help you find the very best of what's available.

As Col. Plink said, the staff is awesome. I was at the North Store not long ago and that was my experience, and I've heard it said a million times. Everyone that I have interacted with from CMP has been first rate. Even the other customers that were there were very helpful. Look on their forums, and you will see that echoed many times.

I do find it strange that they advertise SA Service Grades by order but are not available if you go in person. There were no SG's on the racks in Alabama as of three weeks ago.

Service grades are being held to fill the tremendous amount of mail-orders the CMP received. That's the only reason you don't see them in the stores. :(

I wouldn't let that stop you though. I was there in June, found a very nice field grade that gauged just over 2 on the throat and muzzle. No real wear was evident on the rifle. Field grades are 495.00. Imagine how ratty and decrepit a Garand must be to be priced at 495 in a gun shop! At the CMP you find solid, sweet rifles for that price.

Now if I get a field grade for 495.00 and a new CMP stock for 120.00 I would have the equivalent of a service grade, plus a spare GI stock for about the same price of a service grade...

No brainer is what they usually call that. :)

I appreciate your effort. :)

Sometimes it is difficult to keep it on the High Road. The dark has it's own particular allure...
