I've got a decision ahead of me.. to buy an M1 Garand from the CMP (of which there are millions but are drying up) for ~$600 or buy a colt reproduction M1911 for $900 (of which there are only 4000, ever)

Which would you get? I'm thinking maybe the colt because of the limited number.

I'd say M1, limited availability of those, while there are dozens of companies making 1911s

You make it sound like this is the last gun you are ever going to have. If it is, well, reproduction is reproduction. They will make more. USGI M-1's aren't being made anymore. If it just means you will put the Garand off until Christmas or something like that, go for the 1911!

This poll isn't helping! :D 50/50 right now.

I say Garand. The first repro Colt I bought was so screwed up they had to send me a new one. The one I have now is nice, but a CMP Garand isn't a repro!

Grab one now, before all you can get is re-welded de-mills at gun shows or $3000 beaters.

A No Brainer

get the M1.

The epitome of a killing machine.
Nothing finer came out of the twentieth century.
You can always get a 1911, M1s are getting more and more scarce.

Problem solved!

I'll get the 1911 first and then ask for the Garand for my birthday which is in mid october!

But one question remains... Which grade of CMP garand is the best "bang-for-the-buck"?

Buy the "Correct Grade" CMP Garand for $900. They aren't making them anymore (despite what you may hear from SA sellers). Any third world country can make you a "Colt" grade 1911 today. The CMP correct Garand will be worth more the day it's delivered than you will get for your Colt 10 years from now.

I'm not looking for resale value in a garand. I want an accurate shooter. I don't care if the parts are matching or correct, just as long as everything is USGI

how much does looks matter?

If looks matter at all get the correct grade $900. If not get a service grade i think $ 500, little throat errosion, but the stocks can contrast greatly. maybe a field grade $425

I have two service grade M1's: one from SA and one from HRA (a Greek return). I've shot 2 minute groups with each. More than once.

Group size also needs to be noted as 2,3 or 8rds fired. I have a Service Grade M1 and it will consistantly shoot all 8rds well under three inches. But just because 2-3 of those rounds are grouped close together, does not mean it is a 1moa, to me any way.

Get the Garand.
