M1 Garand target pic

Went to the range today, shot my Sig P-220 and M1 Garand. This is a pic of the Garand target. 80 rounds shot at a distsance of 100yds, half from the sititng position, half from the kneeling. I was quite surprised to find the groupings from the kneeling weren't too bad, considering the way the front sight was moving around.

The rifle was designed for exactly those size of targets....

Yes, but for ranges much longer than 100 yards. Aim small, miss small.

Get someone to throw you with tennis balls while you are shooting. That is good practice.

No need for me to shoot at smaller targets. My M1 with a 60 year old barrel will shoot a little under 3" groups (8-round) at 100yds from the bench. Groups will go down to around 2" with 168BTHP rounds.

The M1 was never designed to be a target or sniper rifle. Yes, it can shoot far better groups with newer barrels, bedding, National Match parts, etc..but the standrd M1 was meant to be shot at man sized targets, which is what I was doing.

I haven't shot in the sitting or kneeling position since my days in the USMC, and I just wanted to see how I'd do. More range time from those positions and the groups would look even better I'm sure.

I'll be trying to make it to a 200yd range on my next outing, plus there is a 300-400yd range that I'm planning on getting to as well.
