I recently shot a nice SOCOM and its trigger was noticeably lighter than my M1A. I asked the owner if it had had any work or if it was a NM trigger group and he said no. Anyway, in shooting these rifles, as well as the Garands, I noticed that with the standard stocks my finger is sort of pulling upward on the top half of the trigger, which logic tells me would make the trigger break feel harder than it is.

I feel like my hand is positioned properly on the stock grip, etc... and I don't believe I have particularly small hands (I wear XL motorcycle gloves, for example). Is that trigger position normal?

It may not be where your finger is on the trigger, but where the trigger is on your finger.

I had always shot with the pad of my finger. I went to the AMU's training day at Camp Butner last year and they described placing your finger so that the trigger is on the first joint to give a smoother and stronger pull.

I use the first joint/trigger method as well. With the help of a lot of dry fire practice I found that when I did that my hand held its position better and didn't pull my aim off. This made a huge difference with my pistol shooting.

But I have really big hands & long fingers and that will make a difference in your hold.
