I got a great deal on a new surplus Bianchi M12 holster. Although this holster usually houses an M9 pistol, supposedly this holster is universal and will fit a 1911.
How secure does this holster hold a 1911, and would you feel comfortable carrying your 1911 cocked and locked in one of these holsters? I see where the flap is removable, and there is an optional thumb strap, but again I'm not sure how well this feature will work with a 1911 instead of the M9?

It's no big loss if I can't carry cocked and locked with this holster, since I need a good field holster anyway.

The M12 was designed by Bianchi and really isn't a "fits everything" holster.
It was specifically built to fit the US M9 Beretta pistol.
It will hold the 1911 safely and the thumb break is adjustable to fit most any gun.
It's a thick, bulky holster so it isn't well suited as a concealed holster, but works for open carry.

For a 1911, a better option is the Bianchi UM85/UM92.
It's the same holster only with an improved stabilizing trigger guard reinforcement.
It would fit the 1911 better.

Bianchi sells adapters so that the M12 and the UM holsters can be worn as a hip holster, a shoulder holster, a drop leg holster, with the flap on or off, and as a thumb break holster.
These make a good field holster, since that's exactly what the military use it for.

supposedly this holster is universal
Nope! BTDT!
"Universal doesn't mean it fits everything.
It means it can be configured to any of several different carry methods, from a belt holster, to a shoulder holster, to a thigh holster, to a vest holster, with an open or closed top in any configuration it is worn.

The GI M12 (Beretta M9) holster (Item #14563) does not fit a 1911 properly.
As I recall, the fit is so loose the gun can come out with the flap closed.

The UM84I (Item #14209) is the one you want for the 1911.
