On the Military Channel right now (2:45 pm CDST) , they are comparing the AR and AK. I am just posting this for interest, not starting the old debate up again.

Cool. That must be a channel I don't have. Let's see, they both look pretty evil to me, hmmm.

Dontcha love my dremeling for a better grip on the MAK90? The camo on the AR, and the Red Head brand red dot on the AK prove that these are just huntin' rifles, Mr. G men.

GunGoBoom: *GASP* Your AK-47 must be a child-killing, cop-homing, death machine! Look! Look! It's got...my goodness!...a 75rd rapid-fire drum magazine clip, a thumbhole stock which facilitates firing from the hip, and a forward handgrip to further enhance firing from the hip! You must be some sort of crazed militia vigilante! </sarcasm>

I feel dirty even saying that. In truth, those are some nice looking rifles. As a Californian, I am envious.

I took the extra girth out of my mak 90 stock as well, I then sanded down the whole stock and did it in tung oil.

heypete, lol! You're right, that is one serious baby-killing machine, just as sure as I'm a knuckle-draggin troglodyte. :) Sorry your in kommiefornistan. :banghead: At least get an SU-16C and an M1A if possible - that's what I'd do if I lived there. Thanks guys. Yeah, I should refinish that whole stock. Can you tell me specifically what steps you took to do it in tung oil, either here or via PM? How many sandings, what grits, etc. Thanks!

AR15 sucks! Those things always Jam and parts fall off, not to mention the SISSY 5.56 round!

AK47 rules! Get an AK and you will never go back.

ERRR oh wait! This isn't one of those threads. OOPS! :neener:

The show had some silly things in it:

"The M16 is more accurate because it fires a faster bullet. Faster bullets are more accurate than slow ones." I know that if a bullet travels faster, it has less time for wind and other factors to affect it, but such a blanket statement is too broad and misleading.

Then there was the part comparing the accuracy of the two rifles. The shooters stunk. The M16 was printing basketball sized groups at 200-yards. The AK didn't even hit a human sillhouette, and only hit the target paper in the lower-left corner with one shot. Those rifles are capable of FAR mroe accuracy than that. The AR/M16 should print 4-6" groups at 200 and the AK about 6-8". I realize the guns could be old, shot-out examples, but the "marksmanship" was pathetic.

The speed of the bullet would help make the trajectory flatter, thereby helping improve the SHOOTER'S (not really the rifle's) accuracy by reducing the need to adjust for a rainbow trajectory. The faster the bullet goes, and the longer it keeps going fast, the less distance it will fall between yards. Remember that a bullet dropped from the hand at the side of the rifle and the bullet launched from the barrel are falling to earth at the same speed, so the faster the bullet goes and the better it's BC is, the more distance it can cover before it hits ground.

Right, but speed alone does not make a more accurate bullet. Bullet construction, case design, and other factors all come into play.

Yes, all else equal, a faster bullet is more accurate than a slower one.

However, handloaded M118-spec 7.62 Match at 2700-ish fps is going to be more accurate than mil-spec M193 at 3250 fps.

So saying that, across the board, "faster bullets are more accurate", is misleading.

I can't really say which one is "better", but up until a few months ago I would have said the AK was a POS. That being said, I went to the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot this spring (which I highly recommend). I rented a full-auto M-16 to shoot, which was a lot more fun than my semi AR. The range was flooded so we had to shoot into the hillside and the .223 was kicking up some dust putting some nice holes into the trees.

Then I then saw (didn't rent) the full-auto AK in action. :what: HOLY FRIJOLES!!!! Dirt was flying all over the place and the trees were beggin' for mercy. I don't know about accuracy, but for close range the 7.62 AK was awesome!!

I am definitely going back again this fall and I guarantee I will be renting that guy!!

BTW: The BAR and Thompson were even better!! :D

Sounds like the episode of "Greatest Military Clashes" about the Cold War. They do M-16 vs AK and Mig-15 vs F-86 as I recall.

I watched some of it. Sounded pretty dumbed-down, and all the points are points that have been raised several hundred times here on THR. Perhaps a good show for non-gunnies, but I found it kind of boring.
