I'm a U.S. Marine currently in Afghanistan and I've decided that i really want to build a faithful re-creation of the rifle I carried last time I was out here, the M14 DMR.

So, I have a few questions.

1. Where (if possible) can I find a stand alone M14 receiver, or barreled action with a Krieger mid-weight 22" barrel?

2. Is it possible to buy a receiver and barrel separate and then have a gunsmith attach them? I'm not sure what machinery would be involved or what kind of affect it may have on accuracy.

3. What sort of things to i need to take into account with this platform as far as ammo preference and overall quirks of the system?

4. What parts of the build can be done at home and what parts must be left to the factory or a gunsmith?

Any insight you can provide for my upcoming project would be greatly appreciated!

If it's a true M14, there are considerable legal and co$tly issues to be considered first. Perhaps some of the folks from the free states might be inclined to take it from here.
Otherwise, you could find/build a version of the M1-A.

The M14 forum is where I went to learn as much as possaible about this rifle...I then found what I wanted on gunbroker...a Fed.Ord. M14A with all USGI parts except for the receiver of course. Looks like your looking for something newer....keep up the good work.

Yeah, sorry I meant to say M1A receiver (at least I remembered in the thread title). Hell, the M14 I carried was a Winchester and it of course had the fun switch removed and replaced with a non-movable plug.

M1A

Out of the 7 I have owned (picking up#8 next week) not one malfunction ever. Don't recall any malfunctions with those I used in the 60s. Great rifle.

If you’re looking for a barreled action I personal would go with an LRB M14SA. I built my M14 EBR on one of their barreled action #2 and it's great. I have LRB building me a barreled action #3 right now and they said the other day on the phone that they should be test firing it here next week and then shipping it out.

Also they give a military discount.
