M1A mount & rings

I'm about to pick up an M1A I bought from Buds. I eventually want to put a scope on it and I've heard that all 3 generations of the Springfield mounts are not so good.

I'd like to get a good, reliable, solid mount, but dont want to pay an absurd amount for something like the Smith Enterprises mount.

I've narrowed it down to an aluminum Sadlak, or an ARMS #18 (but I'm open to suggestions on something just as good, or better in the same price range < $200).

If any one has first hand experience with either of these, positive or negative, please share so I can decide which one to go with.

Also, about rings: I want to get some quick detach rings. I'm leaning towards the Leupold QRW rings as I had good success with their PRW rings. These are weaver rings, if I'm not mistaken. So my main question here is, do weaver rings work on picatinny rails, or is it the picatinny rings that work on weaver rails?

Sadlak is a great bang for the buck. I have been using their aluminum mount with Burris xtreme tactical rings starting four years now. Rock solid, plus Sadlak is the only manufacturer that has a "fitting kit" for fitting mounts on receivers that are not in perfect spec.

Basset Mount

I purchased the Basset High mount -- Picatinny Rail Version -- http://www.bassettmachine.com/prod_smpr.htm

-- Not horribly expensive, $150 delivered
-- Easy to remove and install -- could take to Camp Perry to shoot iron (remove Scope mount) or re-install in less than a few minutes to use scope. Could also remove scope mount to clean weapon -- easier to clean and protects the scope
-- Advertised to hold zero (give or take) when re-installed -- money saved on re-zeroing -- ammo costs -- I think it is 1/2 moa hold when re-installed
-- Installs using only one bolt -- does not use stripper clip for added support.

The mount is machined/made so that in engages the left side of the M1A receiver where the depression are -- when tighten to specs it is very solid.

I got the high so I do not have to remove the scope to use irons -- I definitely have to remove cheek pad (blackhawk velco version -- probably be able to remove in under a minute)

i have been thinking about this myself and from what i have learned both from here & the m14 firingline, i'm going with the basset mount.

Another vote for the Bassett. Great mount. Just try finding one used; that will tell you what you need to know. There aren't any out there.

I have the arms 18 on my scout squad... but no optics. I bought my m1a used and it was already installed, all i can say is that i have never seen it impede function before, APPEARS really solid, and APPEARS to be low enough that i wouldn't need a cheek raiser, sorry i couldn't be more help

I really like my Bassett mount too... Low picatinny, but if I have hear alot of positive recommendations to the Sadlak steel mount. Aluminum I don't know. ARMS seems pretty popular.

The Basset will give you the best bang for the buck... ( although they aren't particularlly attractive..)

I went with a Smith Enterprises M-21 mount. The mount is solid and very nice but it is pricey.

bassett machine mount. good mount if you want to take it on and off a lot.
