I am looking to buy a new M1A, probably either from LRB (two miles from my home)and send off to McMillan for a stock, or a super match springfield.

My question to those who know is: Does the rear lug make a difference in a rifle thats properly bedded to a stock like a McMillan?
LRB and Springfield both make a rear lug receiver and a standard non lug receiver, and the price difference is ony about 10-15% of the total price.
If its that much better for accuracy, I'll spend the money, but if it really doesn't make a difference in a rifle with a properly bedded fiberglass stock, I'll buy some extra mags and some ammo.

any help would be appreciated.
thanks

The purpose of a receiver lug is to increase the area available for bedding, so that the bedding job will last longer and the rifle will maintain its accuracy over a longer period of time. I don't shoot a lugged rifle, but others have said the benefits are marginal especially if using tough steel bedding materials.

nyresq hi neighbor. 3 miles from Larry lol From what I heard he's got a huge backlog on rifles and receivers. There have been a few of his works for sale at m-14 forums. Have no rear lugged M1A's just a Loaded with NM parts and some GI stuff added and an all GI ,except barrel, 18" bush. Put the Bush in a Sage Chopmod and its much Tighter rifle, which adds to accuracy. Good luck in your quest.

Telperion hit the nail on the head. Unless you are firing 6 days a week, the rear lug is not an appendage that's going to be doing anything for you.

One other factor to ponder. The rear lug can fail, by having the welds
that attach the lug to the receiver break. The accuracy then is gone.
I would go with the standard receiver. Less to go wrong.

chestnut, the lug is forged as a single piece with the receiver on the LRB receiver... not sure about the springfield as I haven't seen one up close yet...

Does LRB say it's part of the forging? I'd be surprised if it is--it would take a different forging die to make that happen. The picture on their website looks like it's welded. SA Inc welds the lug on.
