i posted this gun a while back to get advice on how to paint it. well, here is the finished product. sent it to Missionspec Camo in Utah. they did a very quality job.

this gun was a fun project. i got a used Scout (1999). slapped a votex flash hider on it and dropped it in a Vltor stock. i installed three gg&g picatinny rails on the stock. it has a tango down front grip, harris bipod and a leatherwood hi lux 1-4x scope. the weapon light is a M20 Olight.

the camo scheme doesnt have much contrast, but it is rather a one color job with two accents softening the overall color.

more details if anyone has any questions.

It looks nice!!

One comment if I may....if you haven't gotten it hot yet you may not have noticed the vented HG... once you get it "hot" the mirage coming off the barrel will make getting a good sight picture near impossible.

Not sure if your scope is high enough to clear the mirage but the irons WILL be useless... thats one of the reasons the solid HGs were made..

HTH :)

As Jeremy2171 mentions, the heat coming through the vented handguard may be a problem. But looks great. Can I ask where you got that handguard? Is it plastic, fiberglass or metal?

ok....questions....and answers.....

the price: well you can look at missionspec camo's web page and they have 3 different price sets: ONE COLOR; 2-3 COLOR; AND ADVANCED CAMO PATTERN. my gun fell in the middle price range (2-3 color). the price was very reasonable for the gun, but then i added a BUNCH of accessories which racked the price up. here is what i had painted and what it cost:

rifle $235

scope $85

bipod $50

front grip $50

weapon light $30 (single color)

2x magazines $50

total: $500

the handguard is just an original M14 vented handguard that i picked up on a gun forum. it is fiberglass, and yes i know about the vented heat problem..... i dont think that is really a problem unless you are really doing some serious rapid fire. i think i chose the vented handguard to add my own personal stamp on the look of the gun. i dont think it really serves a purpose other than looking cool. i went ahead and put a 25rd mag in it too just to make it look a little bit different as well.

as far as the handguard goes.....my only concern is that they painted the inside of it (over the reflective silver paint). i hope i dont have issues with it heating up because of that.

in a nutshell, i am very happy with the quality of their work. i dont mind dropping that kind of money in a gun like this. M1A's hold their value well and with quality duracoat job like this.....they really hold their value!

thanks for the comments.....i've been putting this rifle together for a while now and its finally done.....whew! had to spend that money before tax season. now im just waiting for the next hunting season.

and p.s.

those who mentioned the vented handguard omitting heat.....if you have personal stories then do tell. i have yet to shoot this gun and when i do i will be sure to give a range report. if the "heat vents" are a problem then i wouldnt be opposed to changing to a solid one.

also, usually when i shoot, i have the front lens cover of the scope to where it flips down......not sure if this would help block a heat mirage though.

Once you get a magazine or two through it at a rapid rate..like in a 3-gun or "real life" situation you will get mirage (unless you live in Alaska in winter :D ) That mirage will come from the whole length of the barrel and extend up a few inches until it dissipates.

I had one on my std M1A for the first few months..then finally got to shooting it in a match (popup tgt style). It got to where you could barely see the target through mirage and it was impossible to get a proper sight picture. Put on a solid HG and problem disappeared...

what is non-skid drawer liner?

I think its that stuff you put in a kitchen drawer so your stuff doesn't slide around?

This with bigger holes to let paint through?
