I already own a standard loaded Springfield M1A and got my money saved up for a scout squad (if I can find one). my rifle still uses only open sights caus e I don't want to put a cheek piece and special mount on it. I just like the classic looks. I am leaning toward scoping the scout squad, do any of yall know if a cheek piece is needed to mount a scout configuration scope on this weapon? I know it has a rail mount up front to accommodate optics, just hate a cheekpiece.

I loved mine until I bought and fired my M&P10. The M1A and I are still close friends . . .

If you use long eye relief or red dot/holo then no cheek piece necessary. Great rifle the scout squad. Not short enough to really kill you on velocity but much handier then the full size.

Kings firearms in Columbia Tennessee has a rifle I would love to have. It is a M1 National Match Springfield in 308 with a beautiful blonde stock. I saw it today when I picked up some powder and ordered some dies. It was a nice feeling rifle. $999.00

I got my standard loaded couple years ago from Buds gun shop for $1450 I think, the scout squads are going from 1600 to 1800 if you can find one. I just love those beautiful walnut stocks, the standard loaded is sort of long especially if you are shooting out of a box blind, I am overrun with wild hogs and love opening up on them when I catch them in a group, cant kill em fast enough.

For a low-slung optic on the front rail section you will not need a cheek pad; however if you use a conventional mount (also requiring removal of the factory stripper clip guide) likely the center of the optic will be too high for a normal cheek weld, thus requiring a cheek pad, or a different stock.
Smith Enterprises makes a very good all steel mount; I avoided the aluminum mounts because of the heat absorption rates are different between the two different metals. I don't know really how critical that is, but I trust what other M1A shooters I know have experienced.
BTW, the Scout Squad has worked perfectly, and for me I find it to be a very good balance between the SOCOM version and the full length rifle.

I had my former Scout set up with the VLtor rail system and aimpoint PRO. No cheek riser needed. Ended up trading it and an AR15 build for a FDE Scar 17.

The Scout was a great rifle but I couldn't resist the temptation of a trade up.

with an aimpoint or eotech, you should be good to go without a cheek riser.

a normal rifle scope which has its front end (objective) in a bell shape, yeah, you might have to go with a taller mount so the bell clears the handguard/rail.

I bought an M1A right when the 1994 AWB got passed. I got gouged bad on the price. I sold it a few years later. Dang! :banghead: I wish I had kept it.

I have the Burris Scout Scope on mine and it is fine without a riser.

The best setup for these IMO is to ditch the factory forward optic mount and install an Ultimak M8 scout mount. It is lower than the factory one, allowing you to get a lower 1/3 co-witness with a low mounted red dot. They typically don't require a raised comb, either.
