My second trip to the range with my new M1A and my trigger is acting screwy. It feels like it takes about 20lbs or more to pull the trigger. Now the trigger will travel smoothly back about a 3/8 inch, then you really have to squeeze hard for less then 1/8 inch to fire it. I have only shot 80 rounds of Winchester ammo with it.

Does anyone know what is going on?

I took the trigger housing out and everything appeared fine. I really do not know the complete operations yet, but nothing appeared broken, scratched, or loose.

Is that book worth buying?

Can you try operating the trigger group outside the rifle? Check if something is binding or catching. Look carefully at the play between the trigger, sear, and hammer hooks.

Duff's book is a must-have for anyone interested in the M1A/M14.

I would suspect the trigger pin and the hammer spring housing are the culprits. Without going into great detail I would pick up a pair for spares if nothing else and swap them out. If you look closely at the hammer spring housing as you function the the hammer (don't pull the trigger and let the hammer fall as it can break-restrain it with your left thumb) you will get a feel for how it works and maybe see what is going on. It may be just a broken trigger pin if you are fortunate.
Hope this helps.
