M1A

My M1A scout had intermittent failures to feed. It probably happened once every 75-100 rounds. I sent it back to Springfield twice but they weren't willing to invest the time needed to really figure out what was wrong. They'd replace an extractor or something and call it good, but the problems continued to occur.

Basically it was a really frustrating problem that no amount of troubleshooting seemed to solve. As soon as I thought I'd fixed by changing to a new type of magazine, ammo, or replacing a part, it'd come right back and start misfeeding again. This thread chronicles the problems of the rifle http://m14forum.com/modern-m14/71171-m1a-scout-fails-cyle-once-every-75-100-rounds-2.html

It was really frustrating, the problems happened with 10 different kinds of ammo, both springfield and CMI (USGI) brand magazines, and I kept the rifle clean and well lubricated.

In the end I just sold the M1A. Luckily, even with full disclosure of it's problems, I still got $1000 for it.

Then I got an LRB M14sa tanker to replace it and haven't looked back. It has worked perfectly!
tell me about the scope and rings(height). I also have a bassett picatinny low mount.

1.got a smith semi,gi glass stock, vented handguard,trw/sak,leatherwood mount with art mpc on it.
2. smith enterprises winchester bolt/barrel setup vented guard,m14e2 stock bipod and fully functioning selector switch

Thanks face. It has been through a lot of different setups, with different stocks and me trying to get an ACOG to work on it, but this is the setup I like best for overall field use.

Hmm, I think LoneStarWings and I need to trade scopes! He has the short barreled rifle with a big scope, and I have the full-length barreled one with a little scope! lol

How about it LoneStar? My broke ass Leatherwood for your Super Sniper? :D How do you like that fixed 10x on there, anyway? It seems like if I had that scope, I would want an offset red dot or something too, for use on closer targets.

BTW, the only problem I had with my rifle was that when I first got it, I would get some stovepipes when I had a scope mounted. Apparently the rifle was ejecting the brass at too high of an angle and it was contacting the scope base. I pulled off the extractor, and it was damn near worn down to a nub! It was so worn it was hard to get it off with the GI M-14 tool, since it didn't have much of an edge left on it. I replaced it with a GI extractor (and ejector while I was at it) and it is back to being a perfectly reliable and deadly machine. :)

They are SWFA super sniper low rings and it's an SWFA super sniper 10x42 30mm fixed power scope.

My 2007 Standard has a documented 1400 rounds through it. I had 5 documented FTEs when it had the factory SAI extractor. This rifle came with an H&R USGI trigger group. The rest of the gun was Springfield Armory, Inc.

The current setup wears:

-VLTOR M14 Modstock with eMod buttstock (stock has not been bedded)
-USGI Extractor to replace the quirky Springfield one
-Sadlak NM Spring Guide
-Sadlak NM non-grooved Titanium Nitride coated Gas piston
-Versa Pod Picatinny Rail & Sling Loop (no longer using the bipod)
-Smith Enterprise Vortex Flash Hider
-Smith Enterprise Weaver Mount (discontinued, but an excellent, affordable mount)
-Tactical Precision Systems TSR-W rings (low height)
-Nikon Monarch 3-12x42mm with BDC reticle

This rifle has been extremely reliable since replacing the extractor with a USGI unit. Using 10-shot groups as a measure, this rifle routinely shoots 1.5 MOA at 100 yards from a rest with Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr ammo. I've found the BDC reticle works great for the accuracy limitations of this M1A. I have had no problems placing shots on an 18" target at 600 yards. For what I need a .308 to do, this has been perfect for me.

SAI S/S with Mr. Basset's mount and a PEPR with a Burris Fullfield Ballisticplex.
the scope and mount were a little high so I made the "potatoe".

Sick.

So want to get a walnut stocked Standard and try my hardest to leave it that way, lol.

I've got the Scout Squad model. Not sure if they still make this particular one or not. 18" barrel. Added an Ultimak scout rail on it and a Burris Scout scope with quick-detach Leupold rings. Functions 100% and is more than accurate enough for what I use it for (plinking, some hunting, truck gun). I included a picture of when I was sighting in the scout scope and a fly landed on the target...

How do you like the scope? I wa looking at the monarch 4x16x42, but was curious about eye relief and scope length

Mist wolf. That sounds almost like bump firing.

I don't know if it's actually a bump-fire or not. From what I understand (and I could be wrong, the guys over on M14 Forum could tell you better) it's something in the trigger design that causes it to double occasionally when milked. The problem goes away when the trigger is pressed firmly. I've had it happen on my M1 Garand (M14 trigger design is the same as the Garand) before I found out what was causing it

Just remember to follow through -- hold the trigger to the rear for just a moment after the rifle fires (long enough to mentally think "follow through") and you won't have any problems with accidentally bump firing it.

some well built beauties on this thread....my basic Socom 16. all ive changed is the addition of a GI type leather sling, and 20rd Checkmate mags

I think the Monarch w/ BDC is perfect for this application (being the full-size M1A in a DMR type shooting role). The M1A doesn't exactly deliver pinpoint accuracy like that found in a tactical bolt action rifle, and so I've found that the BDC circles are realistic and useful tools for hitting torso-sized targets in the 400-600 yard range.

I prefer 3-12x scopes because 3x on the low end is much more useful for closer targets and 12x on the high end is plenty of magnification for the 575-600 yard shooting (which is the max distance I shoot this rifle out to).

Eye relief is much more forgiving than any of the Leupold Mark IV scopes that I've tried. The scope's length "is what it is" and I don't think you'll find anything significantly shorter in the same exact variable magnification range. The Monarch glass quality is, in my opinion, equal to that of the Leupold VX3 series scopes. Nice and bright with a pretty damn accurate color representation.

Here's my woody Loaded.

Wood HG from Brownells, front sling swivel/1913 rail from Fulton, Burris Fullfield II in a SAI gen3 mount, and a re-contoured and Acraglassed cheek riser.

I've recently purchased german surplus and prvi partizan match ammo. I've yet to use the german surplus but the prvi partizan 168gr match was awesome, great ammo.

I was looking to purchase another 1000 plus rounds but the german & prvi our expensive compared to the malaysia, portuguese, pakistani, turkiush, etc... Anyone have experience with these nato rounds or any other rounds?
I've been using German surplus for three years now and I'm very happy with it. Clean burning and steel plate accuracy. I'm down to under 2K, time to find more but seems to be out of stock everywhere. IMI is good shooting surplus and the 100 rounds I ran through my AR10 seemed very accurate.

just got my nikon monarch 4x16x42 scope, looking forward to mounting it tonight and shooting this weekend.
