So I apologize in advance if this post isn't in the right section of the forum, but I figure here is as good as anywhere to ask the question given the overall purpose of this particular area. Let me preface this with a simple story; this morning in the break room at work one of the women who works around here happened to mention her son is currently deployed and that she sends along care packages every so often. Among the things she has had to send one of them are 'gun wipes' as she put it. Apparently the military doesn't provide well in terms of gun maintenance and upkeep, but this isn't about that particular can of worms.

Knowing that such things as bore snakes exist, which could potentially be used fully/partially in place of other cleaning tools, I figured I'd offer to buy the guy one or, at the very least, toss some money her way to buy him something to keep his firearm clean. I let her know and told her I'd look into it...now here comes the part I didn't know about. His standard issue firearm is the M249 SAW; he's sent photos and she knows it well enough. I know these are chambered in 5.56mm which is roughly the equivalent of a .233, based around the .223 Remington as a parent casing.

So my question, with this long-winded basis is two-fold:

1. Would a bore snake made for a .223 work for the M249, given what it fires
and
2. Would it be the proper size to go from end-to-end?

I'm asking because I figure somebody here might have experience with this particular firearm or at least be able to clue me in on other things I might not be taking into consideration. I don't want to drop $15-$25 on something the guy can't use when I could just buy him more of something he could use.

Boresnake, yes. Viper, no. I tried a Viper and it broke. The design of the Viper isn't as good as the Boresnake

Yes, any rifle-length .22 caliber bore snake will work. The .223 and 5.56 have the same diameter bullets, and .22 rimfire bullets are so close that they also use the same kind of bore snake. Also, rifle bore snakes are designed for long rifle barrels, and the barrel of an M249 is on the short end as far as rifles go (18", if I remember correctly).

Get a .22 rifle Boresnake. They are only about $15, so I'd spring for at least two.

For what it's worth, .223rem & 5.56x45 are identical, other than the loading. The snake only is "concerned" with the bore diameter--0.22"
