I picked up an M38, and now I need ammo for it. I was thinking of either buying some surplus Hungarian light ball, or some Bulgarian Heavy ball. Anyone have any experiences with either?
While I'm at it anyone have experiences with these stripper clips?
I've used them both. The light ball will recoil a little softer, but it all shoots just fine. Most of the Bulgarian stuff around now is newer (mid to late 80s), but I haven't found that to make a huge difference.
I have used these stipper clips, they are Tikka (Finnish) marked but are believed to be reproductions. They work fine in my mosins. My M38 seems to like just about any 7.62x54 and the Hungarian light and heavy ball both work well. I generally only shoot heavy ball in my heavier mosins, such as the M39 as the recoil is a bit stout in the M38.
I would think that silver bear, brown bear, or wolf, must all be near the cost of the milsurp now, without be corrosive, and also being reloadable, i think.
I've used Polish Light Ball, Bulgarian Light Ball & Heavy Ball and my 91/30's both shoot the Bulgarina Light Ball best. Not sure with my M38 but the M44's do like the Heavy ball a little better.
Those clips look like Tikkakoski surplus, but the website says "new production." Hard to know what you're getting. If they are steel with a circle "T" on the back they're Finn surplus and worth their weight in gold. I bought a bunch a few years back and tossed my other ones. They actually work. But it could be the picture isn't what they're really selling.
