Recently I handled an older XM177 with the round handguards. My M4 has the oval type handguards. The older round guards felt 10x better... what was the reason for the switch. Any pros/cons to each or is it a more asthetic thing?

I think it was basically for better cooling in full auto use. I am one of those who prefers the old, smaller diameter handguards. Similarly I changed out the A2 pistol grip with the finger groove (in the wrong place for me) for an old A1 type.
