Wow, this baby is pristine and seemed way too hard to pass up for $99 at last weekend's gun show..........just thought I'd share ~ can't wait to shoot her at the range.

Good choice! I recently bought an M44 at a gun show just like that for $91. Laminated stock, good bluing, overall excellent condition. Unfortunately, 7.62x54R ammo is going up in price, but is still fairly affordable. http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/copy_of_7_62x54R.html Some say you should get a recoil pad or something for it..but I don't bother. I like a little recoil. But beware...the M44 is incredibly loud with and bone-jarring muzzle blast. Even wearing muffs whle shooting that beast one time, my ears rang for a bit. In my experience, you feel the muzzle blast as much as hear it. I love it! Enjoy!

M44s are great fun. The bayonet is useful too. Great looking rifle. What was the year of manufacture? How's the bore?

DeerHunter.......>> the bore is very clean and looks good ~ for good measure I ran a patch to find just a little oil and a tiny bit of residue.

How do you 'date' these rifles.....there's a faint 1944 followed by a letter marked on it with a bunch of Russian symbols. I can post a pic later if that helps.

AZAndy ~ yeah, but I used what I had at the time......lol

So yours was made in 1944? I've got a 1945 M44 that has a mirror bright bore (all my Mosins have great bores).

1944 M44 - Ivertsk here! :)

Are the muzzles on your 44's about 1/4 - 1/2 inch back from the end of the barrel? I think they call it a "counterbore" but I'm not sure.

Hopefully you don't plan on shooting yours with "Golden Bear" ammo. I took a bunch of that out today and it is about as inaccurate as anything I've ever seen. I was a little bummed until I came in and pulled a bullet. It mic'd out at .308 and the Moisin has a .312 bore. FWIW.

Have a good one,
Dave

Golden Bear has 7.62x54? I use Brown and Silver bear 203 grain softpoints in all my mosins. My Finns do very well with it.

Yup, shot 3 boxes of it out of the M44 this afternoon when I was supposed to be working. :) It's a 185 Grain "bi-metal FMJ". I won't be buying anymore. Just placed an order with Graf's for some dies and 100 rounds of boxer primed brass. I'm going to fire up the casting pot tomorrow and start rolling my own. I have a feeling this old girl will be able to shoot with the right bullet.

M44s, as with the M38, usually shoot light ball better than heavy ball. My M44 does great with Czech silvertip.

I load for both my Mosins. My first one was an M44, and I picked up a 91/30 in great bore condition a few months back for $59. They're great guns for the price. I have a bunch of corrosive steel-case ammo floatin about, but I load for them just to keep the cleaning effort down.

JDillinger, you can find all the date and armory stamp (and everything else) info right here. No Bibles in Cyrillic script yet, but give 'em time... ;-)

A.

I have not shot my M44 yet (and I bought them so long ago). I did however buy 1000 rounds of that Romanian surplus ammo (in light blue boxes) that is corrosive but it was a whole 8 cents a round.... how can you turn that down??? :D

+1 for the M44!

:)

+1 on czech silvertip if you can find it. Mine shoots quite well with it. Had pretty good luck with the Bulgarian heavy ball too, but not quite as accurate. Still on paper easily though. Definitely a 'must have' gun on the fun factor scale.

WOW, that is the best looking stock I've ever seen on an M44.They are usually a LOT more dinged up.That thing is pretty mint.Nice find.M44's are a RIOT to shoot too.Very loud, and a huge muzzle flash.Recoil can be a little uncomfortable for a lot of people (the steel buttplate can slip around on your shoulder and find bone, if your built like me.OUCH), but a cheap slip on recoil pad will fix that if needed, and then you can shoot all day no problem.Lots of people dont need the pad at all though, seems to depend on how your built.

Your M44 looks identical to mine. Mine is also a 1944 Ishevsk. The bayonet can be used to roast marshmallows when you fire it.:what:
I paid $100 for mine awhile back, and put a scout scope setup on it with a muzzle break to tame the recoil. I love both of my Mosin Nagants. You will probably have to have an intervention to keep you from buying more. They are addictive.:)
