okay heres the deal. I bought an 8mm yugoslavian mauser for $100 in brand new condition and beutiful stock. I have a problem though. I have seen boxes of ammo labeled 8mm but it says 7x57mm and I see some boxes that say 8x57. I asked my local gun store dealer what differance did it make and he couldn't answer the question since he didn't know. I have heard from a friend of mine that 7x57 is 7mm mauser and 8x57 is 8mm mauser. Could any one straighten this up for me because I certainly don't want to have an accident shooting the wrong ammo. Thanks.

You already have the answer: there are two seperate calibers here, 7mm Mauser and 8mm Mauser.

Here are a couple quick Wiki entries on each:

7x57

8x57

I don't know why 7x57 would be mislabeled "8mm" - but avoid it! Unless maybe the box is using the literal name for 8mm, which - as the Wiki states - is 7.92x57

Are you sure that you aren't confusing 7.92 with 7mm? 7.92x57 is the correct designation for 8mm, '8mm' is more or less an American slang description of the cartridge.

Where did you get it?

So where did you get the rifle from? I am thinking I 'need' a Yugo 24/47 and have found them in Collector grade (ie as new) for $179.

Did you buy it local or order it online?

So 7.92x57 is another term for 8mm? Like I said though I don't know about the boxes because I've seen them labeled 7.92x57 and just 8x57 and also just 7x57. I bought it from a gun show. you can get similar deals through your local gun dealer if you go to walmart and find a magazine called Shotgun News. Their usually on the counter of the sporting goods section. They have great deals just avoid a company called Cole distributor they have good prices but you get what you pay for since quality sucks from them.

Yes, 7.92X57 JS is the ammo for the M48 series Mausers as long as it has not been rechambered. It is commonly called 8mm Mauser. 7mm Mauser is a different round.

itll fire the 7x57, you just wont be able to hit the side of a barn with it, it will ly out your muzzle all over the place!!

8x57 is as stated many times above 7.92x57

there is also an 8x57JS this is a lighter load for older GEW88 mausers (as well as a few others that started life as Blackpowder guns) etc... the m48 will handle any 8x57 or 7.92x57 load ya can get for it.

7x57 or 7 mm mauser is a totally different beast, arguably one of the most versatile rnds ever used and was VERY popular in the USA for sporting guns for decades its still one of the most favorites in most other countries, ya will find this most commonly the chambering of M95 mausers such as the very collectable Chilean M95 as well as many other rifles, there has not been much if any surplus 7x57 available for years and when ya do find it it'll run ya closer to 8-10 per 15 as opposed to the $2-3 a box for 8 mm.

Also get ya a quart of surplus GI bore cleaner its the best and designed for cleaning after corrosive ammo usage, I've been collecting milsurps for over 34 years, ALL of them get a steady diet of milsurp ammo (I buy by the case not the 20 rnd box) and have been using GI Bore cleaner for all 1278 rifles for 34 years not one pitted bore in the bunch...

Ya might wanna get ya a case of 8 mm BTW as its starting to get a lil spars latelly.....

I bought a case of romanian surplus and it said 7,92x57 on it. It has shot fine. I have just shot windex down the barrel and ran a patch through it until it was clean. Haven't had any problems with corrosive ammo, just clean it real well. If you like to shoot alot the surplus stuff is cheap. ive got a k98 that i paid $179 for, anyone know where I can find a yugo mauser for $100?

Just to confuse things a little further. The 7x57mm Mauser cartridge was once marketed in the United Kingdom as the .275 Rigby.

I got a very nice 24/47 (matching numbers, nice bore, good stock) coated in cosmoline for $99 from Big 5 sporting goods. Look around, though the 24/47s are getting harder to find around here, (the local mom & pop shop had three for $179, all good and greasey)

As to where to find Yugo mausers for $109 etc... well they are going up, but ya can still find em in every edition of shotgun news as well as most any of the online vendors, if ya live in Dallas/Fortworth TX. area go by Military gun supply rather than ordering online as ya can hand pick em then, everytime I'm in the DFW OR even in TX. period I make a point of dropping in MGS to look over their inventory usually end up shipping several guns back to myself in Arizona etc... (have a 01 ffl) Interordinance has em and if ya watch Big 5 sporting goods sales they go on sale for $89.99 often as well.

If you shoot 7mm mauser in an 8mm chamber, I would think that the case would explode as the chamber walls aren't "encasing" it. You'll certainly have a lot of gas leakage. Not recommended.

Also when cleaning after using corrosive ammo, be sure to clean the bolt, especially the bolt face as the corrosive materials is in the primer and leaves residue on the bolt face and the bolt as well.

+1 on Military Gun Supply in Fort Worth. I just moved to town here and by happy coincidence live only about 10 minutes from them.

That's already cost me plenty of money...I bought 2 M44's and a Nagant revolver from them just this month, plus a hefty stock of surplus ammo.

They have plenty of Yugo Mausers in the 100 dollar range.
