I have an 1941 M91 Carcano Bayonet. It is an original with scabbard in good condition. It was purchased by my father in the 1950's from a military surplus store.

It has several inscriptions stamped on the portion that loops onto the rifle barrel, one inscription on each side:

C GNUTTI=1941

and

L587

What can anyone tell me about this bayonet? It appears to have been issued to C GNUTTI in 1941 or was this the manufacturer?

Is this a rare find? or is it nothing unusual for militaria?

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks,

Tim

Gnutti was and is a well known metals company in Brescia, Italy, and did make swords and bayonets. 1941 is the date of manufacture. The L587 is the serial number of the bayonet. AFAIK, the Italians did not issue bayonets serial numbered to the rifle, as they (like the U.S.) considered the bayonet a weapon on its own.

Not terribly rare. The folding Carcano bayonets are the rare ones.

If you poke around on Ebay some you'll see what they tend to sell for (Ebay is usually high) and you might find some more info.

They are a nice piece of history. However, there isn't a large demand for Italian items like there tends to be for German and American WWII stuff.
