I efiled a Form 1 in early January to convert the M92 PAP. The PDF finally showed up in my inbox on Friday afternoon. An hour after arriving home, it was all done :D

I had never drilled and tapped anything in my life. I was a little nervous. I consider myself handy, but just never had any need to perform a drill and tap operation. I first figured out where I wanted the folding stock hinge to be placed, then marked the position of the holes with a center punch. I measured twice, then hit the marks a few more times with the center punch. This wound up being a good idea, as it gave the drill bit a little tooth to grab onto. Lots of oil and lots of patience yielded good results. The pistol trunion was very hard, so I went a little at a time, then stopped to wipe off the chips and to re-oil the drill bit and the trunion.

Tapping it was easier than I thought it was going to be. Same rules applied; took it slow and stopped often to back out the tap, wipe off chips and re-lube. If you're planning to do this type of conversion, just make sure you measure twice and take the drilling and tapping sloooooow.

The M92 is a fire-breathing dragon! The cone booster throws a huge flame forward, much like the Noveske Flaming Pig. This SBR sounds more like a .308 than a 7.62x39! I want to try out the Manticore Night Brake as well as one of the flash hiders they offer. Spikes also now makes a Dynacomp in this thread pattern, but I'm sure that thing will be downright obnoxious. While lessened recoil would be nice, I don't want to introduce more blast into the equation, but I'll have to see if the trade-offs are worth it. I would definitely like to have something shorter hanging off the front end. I see a $120 muzzle device experiment in my future! :)

That's the Manticore Arms triangle folder. Works with Ace and Stormwerkz folding hinges for sure, and possibly others as well. It's the easy way to get the triangle folder without swapping out the rear trunion and cutting the front trunion for the traditional style latch mechanism. It's basically drill-tap-mount-go!

That's cool - I've got a PAP I want to SBR and that looks just about right. Where did you buy it from?

I know the left side folder is "traditional" but when I made my mini-Draco into an SBR I used a right side folder so I could have a flat surface on the left side for carrying with a sling:

You can cycle and shoot it folded, bit of a PITA to align everything to allow this, but I like the result.

Weld on a Galil type cocking handle and enjoy. It really makes that right side folder concept sing and dance. Love my PAP set up like that.

What's the barrel length?

The mini-Draco specs say 7.75" The muzzle compensator really does reduce the muzzle rise, despite being a "cheap knock-off". Shooting it off sandbags when it was a pistol it jumped like a .44Mag shooting full house loads. With the compensator the recoil was so straight back I skinned my elbows on the bench.

My welding skills are such that I'd never attempt doing anything on a firearm, but the idea does seem worthwhile.

It actually charges pretty easily with the stock folded, the safety is a bit more difficult to put on or off with the stock folded, probably the biggest disadvantage of the right side folder, but the ergonomics of the AK safety is so bad to start with, that its not all that much of a hindrance. OTOH I didn't pay $200 and wait 6+ months so I could shoot it as a pistol with the stock folded :)

Its my favorite AK to shoot.

The receiver & rear trunion of the PAP is angled 6 degrees, so folding to the right will make the stock run afoul of the charging handle. There's some wedges available to make the angle 90 degrees, but I like the left side folders and don't want to add a third piece into the mounting system. As it is, it provides a comfortable cheek weld for using the iron sights, which works for me.

The M92 has a 10" barrel, corresponding to a velocity loss of some 200 FPS. Compared to the 5.56mm, it's a damn near ideal cartridge for SBRs. Effective and cheap to shoot!

I have a Hungarian AMD-65 pistol but I saw this and fell in love ... So I bid on one I saw on GunBroker & won a PAP M85 (.223) last night. I guess there is one more SBR in my future ... Thanks for the inspiration!

It's funny, when I started down this path I was simply looking at buying an Arsenal or a Saiga Legion rifle. There was just no way I was going to be cool with plunking down $1k for a regular old AK. I traveled the road of the M92 conversion and wound up at slightly less than $1k, and that's with 922r parts and tax stamp included. I do believe, however, that the end result is something sweeter than a regular Arsenal or SGL.

I did some more serious sighting in this weekend at 50 yards. With Golden Tiger, the M92 is as accurate as my MP5 clone. This is much, much better than I had anticipated. Couldn't be happier!

I know what you mean, for the M85 I got, 7 extra mags, Tapco FCG, stock& hinge, muzzle devise and tax stamp, I'm going to be right at $970 ... I did buy one of those 7.5" fake cans to "permanently" bring it to 16.25" to shoot it until I get the stamp ... Or maybe I'll just pit it on something else and shoot it as a pistol.

What 922r parts are you using?

Tapco G2 Double Hook, US Palm Grip, Manticore Stock, US Booster.

Honestly, I only shot this thing once when it was a pistol. It was more of a function check than anything else. I made myself busy with my older S&W revolvers while waiting for the eForm to clear. To me, these things are of limited utility in pistol form; they're just plain awkward to shoot. They were born to be SBRs! :)

I built a Hungarian AMD-65 with the original 12" barrel into a pistol back when those kits were $65. I have considered SBRing it because as you noted as a pistol they are pretty much useless; it just sits in the safe so I may go ahead and SBR it at the same time. On the other hand I have 5 other AK's I built from flats and none are SBR's. If I do I'll have to buy more compliance parts, and give it a serial number. The drive of that build was that it didn't need is that it didn't need any of that legal crap to be legal and truly paperless.

I'm rambling ...
