SANDWICH, Mass. (AP) - A state police officer has been placed on restricted duty after the officer's 12-year-old son allegedly got access to his father's gun and pointed it at a neighbor.

State Police spokesman Dave Procopio says Lt. Richard Bolduc has been temporarily reassigned and will not have a service weapon until the investigation into last month's incident is completed.

Sandwich Police Chief Michael Miller told the Cape Cod Times the boy took the unloaded gun from an unlocked bureau in his house and brought it to a neighbor's home. When an argument ensued with other children over whether the gun was real, Miller said the boy pointed it a 5-year-old girl and pulled the trigger.

Miller said Bolduc could face a charge of improper storage of a firearm. The boy faces juvenile charges including assault with a dangerous weapon.
