Machetes (not the movie)

I agree with HSO.

Wasn't trying to redirect the conversation. Just don't want the OP to waste his hard earned money on products that won't work. The Ag Extension office is a wealth of knowledge of all things that grow. If you decide on a application of a chemical product. These folks can tell you exactly what to use, how mix it, best time to apply. Also the products they have are much cheaper and have a higher concentration of product than those found at a home center.

Spend your money on a nicer brush blade.

I'm going to recommend the woodsman's pal also.

I do want to point out though, despite Cold Steel wanting $30+ for a cheap machete on their website, if you do a google shopping search you can find the same machetes for under $10.

So, in my opinion, Cold Steel is pretty good if you want a really cheap, beater, throw-away kind of machete. They do work great for that, I've actually got a bunch of the double-edged machetes that I got for $7 each on sale, that I used to practice my sharpening skills. They ARE sharp enough to use out of the box.

But for the high-quality medium-low kind of budget ones, The woodsman pal can't be beat.

the SOG machete are crap ? seriously ? I was thinking about picking one up because of my satisfaction with their folders, but not if it's certified junk....

SOG machetes are still $10 machetes (you can find them for around $13 on google shopping)

They're not bad for cheap machetes, but don't expect miracles out of something that cheap. It's still intended to be used until dull, then thrown away instead of re-sharpened.

If you WANT something like that, get it. It'll do exactly what it's intended to do, just like Cold Steel.

If you want something that you can abuse, re-sharpen, and still be using when you're old and gray, you're looking for a different category of product.

i am gonna speak back up and besides my kukris i seen a comparison online of a condor golok machete now that was a bad blade for 35.00 /40.00 carbon steel too.thick blade it was chopping up everything with a large kukri, also i think martindale makes a golok machete.,cool blades.

Tramontina is an absolute steal (no pun intended). I've had two of them for years, one for normal use and one that I used to chop electrical wires out of a house I was tearing down (don't ask why I didn't have proper tools...) and both of them are great. Heck the one that has dings and nicks all up and down the blade still takes an edge and will get you through the toughest of trails. If memory serves I paid $6 each for them in the early 2000's.

I would suggest you consider the Condor Golok machete. The handle is much more comfortabe for me than most machetes. I don't care much for blisters. Get the most excellent leather sheath that is sold for it also.

The Kabar Cutless Machete is also excellent if you think you would be comfortable with a shorter blade. Pretty good sheath too.
