It's important to note before we begin that Wisconsin charges different college tuition rates to students who are in state as opposed to out of state. Out of state tuition, obviously, is higher (by about a factor of two when I was in school five years ago), since the student's family is presumably not paying taxes in support of the state university system. It's also important to note that Wisconsin currently has a budget shortfall of around $1.6 billion; that the Governor, prior to his election, promised not to raise tuition more than 8%, then raised it 18%; that he also promised not to raise taxes, but cleverly avoided mentioning he was going to raise every state fee he could get his hands on.

With all that in mind, let's consider the budget proposal recently generated by the fearless leader of this great state, Governor Jim Doyle. In it, he has decided he wants to offer in state tuition rates to illegal aliens.

So, you know, if you're here illegally from, say, Mexico, you can pay less in tuition than if you're here legally from, say, Illinois. Ostensibly, this is because we "don't want to punish the children of illegal aliens for crimes their parents committed." The implication, of course, is that we do want to punish the children of legal citizens for no crimes whatsoever (I've got my problems with Illinois and their stinking tollway*, but even I don't think being from Illinois is a crime).

We also want to punish the children of illegal immigrants if they happened to be born after their parents crossed the border, but before they got to Wisconsin.

We also want to punish the children of immigrants who bothered to go through the legal process, but didn't do so in this state.

We also want to punish the children of immigrants who bothered to go through the legal process, and did do so in this state, since they'll be paying taxes to support the illegal aliens' subsidized tuition rate.

I don't know if this is too ridiculous to be appalling, or too appalling to be ridiculous. The mind boggles.

Oh, and, er...Gov. Doyle also hates guns.

*I kid, of course...but I'm a Wisconsinite, I have to at least act like I hate flatlanders. ;)

Isn't The Guv's name actually Boyle, as in a "boyle on your ???"

Sheeeeshhhhh..dirty politics never ends, does it?

Kansas does it too, according to what my Mom sends me. Could the political parties of the respective Governors have anything to do with it? :uhoh:

Sounds like Doyle is courting the Illegals vote in 2006.

Why not? There were enough illegal votes cast just in Milwaukee last year that, if they were thrown out, Bush would have carried Wisconsin.

Doyle and the Democrats know where the votes--legal or not--are.

***? Our illogical, nauseating laws.....

Most of our laws are bass-ackwards and that's pretty much it in a nutshell. Common sense? Ha! Like, who in DC has any of THAT these days...? Or in ANY state house, for that matter. Don't feel all alone, Wisconsin! You should see what nonsense passes for politics here in Oregon!! :banghead:
