Mag pouch for gunsite

I am going to gunsite in october, (very, very, excited, by the way).

I currently have a blade tech double mag pouch for my 1911, which will be my gun for the course.

I was wondering from anyone with experience with gunsite, or other shooting schools think this will be sufficient? or would i be better served by getting the quad mag pouch?

I'm just worried about not having enough rounds for some of the exercises, considering many people will have double stack guns holding 15-20 rounds in each mag, I'm thinking 8x2 might not be enough extra.

In classes where 1911s are on the firing line with higher cap pistol designs, mag capacity will almost always be an issue. I would, however, recommend carrying your ready mags in whatever pouch set up you are comfortable with and plan to use and carry some loaded spares in your pockets or whatever so you can refill your mag pouches without leaving the firing line.

There have always been a lot of different trains of thought on this. I still remember a guy who showed up for a class with a G17 and enough loaded mags to not have to reload them until lunch...it really made a lot of sense.

However I do have some interesting pictures to share of how different feel on the matter:

1. A very neat quad setup...I believe these are 9mm Sig 229 mags


2. A guy who went with a simple double carrier and extras in his pocket...9mm Sig 226 mags

In a course, i either use a double mag pouch, or 2x singles. I feed them from the back pockets of my 5.11 pants as needed to stay on line training longer.

it sounds like it might be worth it to bring both? the double maq pouch in front to use during drills, and the quad behind the hip (7, or 7:30) to refill between drills without having to go back to get more, or keeping them loose in the pocket.

A small toolbag, with straps that wrap under the bottom for strength, is very handy for toting ammunition and magazines for class or competition.

I prefer to train with gear most like what I carry. You want to avoid a habit of grabbing magazines out of places where you have no intention of actually carrying them. Reload form the primary pouch, then refill the pouch form the pocket.

If possible, use training magazines, not carry magazines. You are going to drop them in dusty and hard places. They will get beat up.

Gunsite is hot and dry and dusty. Bring a canteen and keep drinking water. Bring high-grade sunblock. Drink plenty of water. Use *minimal* lube on your firearms. Drink plenty of water.

Firearms? You are taking at least one spare, right? Plus spare gun leather, hearing protection, etc. Breaking something on day 1 should not end your class if you take spares. Bring a small cleaning kit with you. Bring a few essential tools.

Thanks for the advice. that does make sense, I'll have to try and see how comfortable it is to carry extra mags in my back pocket, i normally don't do that, so ill have to make sure its not too distracting.

I will be bringing a spare handgun, as well as spare just about everything else, but if all else fails, i've heard they have a good proshop, as well as rental guns, etc.

I am also planning on bringing what i need to clean and lube my gun, as well as detail strip it if necessary, just in case. Like you said, I don't need gun malfunctions all week because of something i could have fixed if i had brought the right tool.

You will find that re-loading is very common - most people bring what they carry and when you need to re-load you do it. I couldn't afford the week long class so I'm just speaking from experience with their CCW course, but for me it was more important to keep it real and just carry 2 spare mags. You will be there to learn, and there's a lot more to the pistol than pulling the trigger. Who carries a dozen magazines around? BTW, their pro shop is really good.

I have used a leather Galco mag pouch designed for two Glock 21 mags, stretched them a little, and they now hold four 1911 mags. As others have mentioned, a tool or shoulder (man) bag for stuffing spent mags in is not a bad idea, either, and you can carry ammo, snacks, or other useful stuff in it.
