I assembled this spikes lower and began with an extended mag button release and noticed it would catch on the left (serial no. Side) so I thought since the ext mag button didnt allow the threads of the actual mag catch to go in quite as far as a standard one would, the additional distance the mag catch could cause it to catch on the reciever.

I thought I would remedy the problem by just bagging the ext release and install a standard mil spec one but I'm finding that every few mags or so the catch is catching on the reciever when I push to release the mag. Not good. Very irritating. I've done quite a few lowers and cant figure out why this is happening. There is no burs on the reciever and it seems as though it should function fine. Have any of you guys had to futz around with this problem? Pic for reference.

Do you perhaps not have the opposite side release button screwed in far enough so that when you push it in flush with the lower, it pushes the catch bar on the opposite side out beyond the slot in the lower?

Can the latch be pushed back into position? If so I would take a look at the release spring. It might not be going in correctly or is damaged. Mag releases are pretty cheap parts, you could easily replace the whole assembly. If you still have the problem, there is a deformity inside. And you will have an extra mag catch.

That was the case with the original extended mag release catch. It could travel 'out of the receiver if pushed hard enough and catch. With the standard one I have the threads wound flush with the mag button, just like all my others so there is no possibility of over extending it out of the slot but it's still catching.... it's a real head scratcher

I put a new spring in. The first spring I put in was real tight fit. By the way I would advise against the armaspec ext mag release. Unless there is just something out of spec with my spikes lower....

I took some fine grit sandpaper to the catch and slot and did about a hundred push tests. Seems to be ok now. Bothers me but time will tell if it persists....

Could be worse.
I had a Ruger M96 in .44 Magnum/.44 Special that would spit the magazine out with every shot until the last round. It would not drop the magazine with the last shot fired, though. Never did get that thing figured out.... :scrutiny:
