I've read several times that the weak point of any semi-auto is the magazines. I'll buy that. Knowing that magazines should be maintained is one thing, but actually knowing how to do it is another. How do you clean 1911 magazines and replace the springs? I'm asking about all 1911 magazines in general, but also about CMC Shooting Stars specifically.

Empty the magazine. Tip the follower and slide it out as you restrain the spring. clean the inside, wipe, oil and then dry the spring and follower, assemble in reverse order. If, on the other hand you have a later model magazine you can simply depress the bottom plate through the base plate, slide the base plate off and remove the bottom plate, spring and follower. Clean as above. Do not leave oil in or on the magazine or its internal parts.

It's a lot easier if you push the follower down part way and stick a punch or something through one of the witness holes. Then whack the mag on your palm and the follower will pop loose from the spring where it can be easily removed. The pull the punch and catch the spring when it flys out!
Clean & re-lube with Dri-Slide, or silicone spray.
Do not use oil in the mags.
Then put the spring back in the right way, push it down past the feed lips with the end of the follower, then tip it into place with the base leg under the spring.

Most mags will come apart relatively easily & require a simple cleaning and wipe down w/ lightly lubed cloth
