Guys, my ignorance is going to be showing; sorry. I have an 870 HD with the 18" bbl, and I'm used to being able to put 4 shells in the mag and one in the pipe. I picked up another 870 Express Magnum today, 28" bbl, and I can only put 2 in the magazine. What gives? Is there some regulation I don't know about? I'm not a hunter, it's just to help with varmints on my property, and I'd like to be able to fill 'er up like my other one.

This is an older, used one I picked up from a pawn shop at a great price; if there's a plug in it, how do I take it out?

you should see some sort of wooden (if its really old) or plastic rod in the magazine tube. a simple feild strip should tell you wether there is one inplace or not. Unscrew the magazine cap, you'll be able to tell if there is one or not.

just because you have a lack of knowledge about firearms doesn't mean that you're ignorant.. atleast you're trying to learn something :p

Uncsrew the mag cap. The plug should look kinda like a wood or green plastic golf tee, I guess. The mag spring should be held captive by the retainer, so the plug should just drop out if you tip the gun foreward.

Chances are you will have to take out the magazine spring retainer as well, in order to remove the plug. Depends on whether your Express is an older or newer model as to how that is done- older model retainer is spring steel and has to be carefully pried out, new model is plastic and gets pushed down into the magazine tube and turned a quarter turn to clear the dimples in the mag tube. See the owners manual online at Remington's site: http://www.remington.com/whatsnew/readroom.htm .

Be sure you control the magazine spring in the process, and keep it pointed away from you in case you slip... .

Be sure to keep track of the plug, if the gun ever gets used for migratory bird hunting (ducks/doves) be sure to put the plug back in.

You have no need to apologize for not knowing something. Everyone is ignorant about something. Only God is all knowing.

just because you have a lack of knowledge about firearms doesn't mean that you're ignorant.. at least you're trying to learn something
Sorry, but that is exactly what it means.

the express supermag has a 3+1 cap. for 3 1/2" shells, and 4+1 for 2 3/4" and 3" shells. check the mag tube, there will be a stopper in there.
