When I load up my M&P magazine it occasionally sounds like there is something rattling inside. I assume its a round hitting the front of the magazine. The odd thing is it does not do it consistently. Sometimes it fixes itself by adding to subtracting a round other times I can load the mag and shake it after each round without any noise at all.

Any ideas on whats going on and if I should worry about it?

I have a 9mm full size M&P mag that does the same thing. It has never affected anything, so I just haven't paid much attention to it.

perfectly normal for an M&P. I could be wrong, but it's probably the ammo rattling because the cases don't have enough friction between them to prevent it. Unless you're sneaking up on someone with another gun and carrying the M&P holstered, the noise is not a concern. It seems to be more distinct with HP's than round nose.

The case taper of the 9mm allows it on a lot of different guns.

Sometimes smacking it on your palm or boot heel will allow them to settle into better alignment.

I have started to do the tactical slap mostly because it looks cool but it seems to help too. Alright glad to see that its not a huge issue.

It seems to be a universal "annoyance" for most high cap mags. I have that rattle for my Sig226, my CZ PO1, and my CZ 97B. NONE, in my single stack mags.

Rattling is pretty common in double-column 9mm magazines, I've found. I have a CZ mag that rattles with an even (8, 10, 12, 14) number of rounds loaded, but not an odd number. (The other three I have do not rattle.) The 13-round factory in my SIG P228 rattles a little when fully loaded; the 10-round factory mags I used to have (until leaving California:)) would rattle like castanets, but only when fully loaded. None of them have ever malfunctioned, so I don't let it bother me.

Any double stack magazine can have this happen. You are basically stacking bullets at a 45 degree angle relative to each other. If the rim of one casing is sitting in front of the rim of another casing it will allow the front of that round to move causing rattling.

Like the others have posted a quick rap on the palm or side of a boot will normally remedy this.

I haven't heard any rattles in my M&P 40c mags, but my XD 45 mags rattle a little bit. I just give them a good slap like the other fellas mentioned.
