I just recently bought an inexpensive set of hollow ground screwdriver bits (and handle) made by Pachmayr. First, I was not real happy when I saw that of the 12 slotted bits included in the set, 4 were just duplicates. Then when I first used the 1/8 bit to remove the grip screws from my STI Trojan, I noticed how narrow the bit is across (1/8 inch) relative to the width of the grip screw. It doesn't cover even 1/3 of the screw slot. I was afraid to use it, because there would be very uneven pressure applied across the screw head slot.
So anyway, I guess I am wondering if I made a mistake by not buying Brownell's magna-tip set instead (24 pieces). I know the quality is probably better, but my needs are relatively simple. Are Brownell bits wider across, or are all manufacturers same sized bits generally configured the same? Do they duplicate bits in their sets also? Any opinions/advice from those familiar with magna-tip style screwdrivers would be appreciated.

The Brownells come in different widths as well as thicknesses.

Nearly all these screwdrivers are the same 1/4" hex drive, so Brownells or any industrial hardware tip will fit your Pachmayr handle. No need to buy another whole outfit.

You can buy individual tips from Brownells, they are cataloged by width and thickness. Many in the set are rather thick, the intent is for the working gunsmith to grind one to fit a specific screw. Then keep it that way if he works on that model frequently or regrind it for something else if he doesn't.

The cheapie set you bought is good for the road. Better screwdrivers are to be had and those stay at home.
