i just came from the midway usa website where i spotted 209 MAGNUM primers. i know it isnt necessary to use these with bp subs (i shoot triple 7 in an in-line) but i wondered if it would hurt. do you think it would send the pressures sky high? is pressure as relevent in bp shooting as it is in centerfire reloading? i am asking, because i dont know, so please, no smart *** replies. i dont have much bp experience. and i know there are some of you guys out there, that live for this.

The so-called 'magnum' primers don't influence the pressure curve of the powder despite marketing claims. They may, in fact probably do, produce a hotter ignition flame than their regular counterpart, but once the powder is burning that flame is gone and the powder does what it's designed to do. Using a hotter ignition source does not change the physical and chemical characteristics of the powder and how it burns.

But using them may cause more of a crud ring to form in the breech with 777 powder, at least in some guns.
The 777 pellets are known for producing more of a crud ring, but IIRC the loose 777 powder can too when used with hotter primers.
That's why Winchester came out with their 777 primers which are weaker than regular 209 primers.
The magnum primers might be better with Pyrodex pellets, APP Sticks or the new Blackhorn 209 powder because BH 209 is the most difficult substitute powder to ignite. Large powder charges, coarse powder or the Savage smokeless ML might also benefit from using them.
But using Magnim primers may also increase the risk of the bullet moving forward before the powder fully ignites and causing flyers or a loss of accuracy.
They could be worth experimenting with anyway since every gun and load is different.

No inline or 209 experience here, but I've tried both regular and "magnum" #11 caps and have not noticed a difference. All I shoot is 777 FFFg and holy black, though :)

Kartoffel - I guess you answered a question I had. I use standard #11s with Goex, and wanted to try 777 and thought I might have to go to magnum 11s. You say it makes no difference. Neat! Kartoffel = potato ?

Ive encountered a few fail to fires with triple 7 ffg powder and standard 11 caps if im not careful on how much its compressed while loading but doubt there is enough of a difference between standard and magnum caps to of prevented the misfires but it might of, never have a problem with triple 7 if the rifle has the hotter 209 primers.

i agree with aritcap. On hard to start powders a magnum or regular primer would be ideal. However a weaker primer has proved to work best. You dont want to get the bullet moving before the powder has ignited. Now with c&B i purchased some magnum cci caps and found no difference. In either accuracy or igniting
