Magpul Pmag problems in S&W MP-15 need help!!

I got a S&W M&P-15a off of a friend about a month ago and im planning on ordering magpul pmags for it. I accidentally stumbled across a article that stated that the pmags might not fit in early production mp rifles. My serial number is in the 18xxx range is this one of the problematic rifles and if so does S&W do a return service to either modify or replace the lower? any help is good and appreciated help.

I can't imagine S&W feels responsible to make their receiver fit after market mags.
If it works with S&W mags, they are done.

That maybe the thought when they first made them but thats not the case now. They sell the Magpul equiped moe MP 15 with pmags included and newer mp rifles can use and are SOLD with magpul pmags. If im going to pay for a high end ar i would hope it would at least be designed to take as many different mags as possible. you hear no problems about noveskes or sabres not taking pmags.

You should be good to go. I have an earlier SN, and mine has no problems running Pmags, Lancers or any other aftermarket mags, the only complaint I could possibly have about the setup is a barrel with slightly less life because of a different type of steel in the barrels and a 1/9 twist not a 1/7. But unless your trying to shoot out the barrel or go for heavier grain rounds at a longer distance you'll never notice.

And the Pmags "should" fit anyway, worst case should simply be that they wont drop free... but some pmags dont drop free out of my FN SCAR, doesnt mean that I need to send the rifle back to the factory, Just that the Pmags are different than USGI mags by a little bit.

Or if the Pmags wont fit, try sanding the edges down, I've read about a few people sanding the outside of a pmag to get a desired fit and the drop free feature.

Older P-Mags are tiny bit thicker than newer design.

I have a newer M&P15 and it came with PMags, which are all I use. Doubt you will have any probs at all, but to be safe, as mentioned above make sure you get the 'M' revision PMags when you buy some - they are thinner and were revised because of complaints (not limited to S&W btw) that the early ones didn't always drop free.

I'm with Kwanger. Just buy the Revision M PMAGs and you won't have any problems. They will have gray followers like these:

I'm not saying you're wrong, but it seems like saying that Chevrolet is responsible to make sure that the muffler from J.C. Whitney fits. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I've got an older M&P and have never had any issues with any magazines.

Like some people said I also think it has to do with how old your pmags are. I just got a LWRC M6A2 and non of my older pmags fit in the thing but my buddies newer ones were fine.

You could also get sand paper and sand down your mags a bit.

I have a 18xxx myself and I've had no issues with PMags or Lancers. Your best bet would be to just borrow a magazine and see if yours has an issue with it. If so contact S&W. If not your set.

Good analogy, sir, but it doesn't quite fit this situation. The Chevy is not built to any "universal standard" and even different model years of the same Chevy model won't necessarily have interchangeable mufflers. In this case, as you point out, it is incumbent on J.C. Whitney to make sure that their mufflers fit the single GM "standard".

Most AR type rifles (MOST, not ALL) that aren't special builds, are built to Mil Specs. This allows parts - including mags also built to Mil Specs - from one brand to fit and function properly in another brand. There are AR fans who regularly assemble custom rifles out of parts made by many different manufacturers. This is possible because these parts are all built to the same standards.

SOME early versions of the S&W MP15 rifles were built with lowers that would NOT accept the PMAGs that were on the market at that time. Both S&W and Magpul made modifications to their products to solve the problem. Magpul slightly modified the design of one of the ribs on their mags and would swap new mags for old ones if you asked them to. S&W customer service accepted rifles back and modified the offending lowers so they would accept the existing PMAGS.

The upshot is that the OP need not worry. If he has one of the affected rifles (the odds are that he doesn't), he can buy NEW PMAGS which will work or if he has old ones that don't work, he can take a Dremel tool to those existing "bad" PMAGS (or maybe get them swapped for new), or if he needs reliabilty with ANY PMAG old or new, he can send the rifle back to S&W and they'll fix it.
