My Bulgarian Makarov is not functioning properly. When the hammer is back and I pull the trigger it goes bang. When the hammer is down with safety off it will not go through the full Double action to fire pistol. I took off the handguard and it will still not fire in DAO mode. Please advise.

Please let us know if you figure this out. I have a Mak I cannot get to fire in double action although it is fine single action. I have replaced many parts without any luck. If I switch the slide with the one from my other Mak (which works great both double and single), both pistols fire as they should.

One thing to check would be to make sure the mainspring is in properly. Hopefully, you don't have Drakejake's seemingly unsolveable problem.

First let clear up something. It won't fire in double action, what does the hammer do? If the hammer stays all the way back and won't release do this test. Pull the trigger in double action when the hammer is all the way back and won't release push the hammer slighly to the left with your finger, if the hammer then releases you have a new 150.00 dollar paperweight.
If this is the problem parts replacement is a waste of time. What is taking place is that the trigger bar is pulling the hammer strut foward almost out of position and cocking the hammer to the side. The cure is that the right strut hole is too big and need to be fixed by welding it closed then re-cut. The trigger bar could be out of spec also, possibly too short.

Considering that there is no "handguard" on a Makarov, what is it that you removed that you thought might provide a clue to the problem?
If you want help, you will have to provide more detail.

When you pull the trigger in DA mode the hammer moves back but does not travel all the way back to engage with the sear prior to firing. I took off the grip to see if the mainspring was broken.

Take off the grip and slide and study the mechanism. Don't let the hammer free fall forward without the slide as it might put undue stress on parts. Post your location and a local might be able to help.
