Make your own Holster?

Just curious if anyone out there has made their own holster. One of my biggest complaints is that I can never seam to find a good shop out there that had a decent selection in holsters for the particular gun I happen to have. Is seams that if you don’t have a Glock then you are out of luck in any sort of selection. You are then stuck with an uncle mikes or some other pos holster.

This topic has been dead for a while so I thought I would see if there is anything new out there.

I have just made my first order for materials. I went to the Tandy leather factory and got a belly hide and I also have some Kydex coming in the mail from the Knife Kit.

I have several ideas of what I want to do but would love to hear or preferably SEE what some of you have come up with.

All the materials so far have been relatively inexpensive. Less than the cost of one quality leather holster and I have enough material to make, or try to make several holsters both kydex and leather.

The "belly" of the leather side is not conducive to making holsters. It definitely will work for making patterns/sizing if you want. But when you get ready to make a holster that you plan on using every day, you'll need to make it from the shoulder or back area of a side of leather.

I asked that question to the guy that helped me at the leather factory. He said it was all pretty much the same. Im guessing he did not know what the heck he was talking about.

So what is the difference?

My digital camera is broken, seems you can't drop those things off the top of a high bookcase more than once and expect them to work. Otherwise I'd post a pic of my kydex holster. I've been using it regularly for over a year now with no problems. In fact I'm going to make another one when my wife gets home with the Bersa tomorrow.

I like leather, but here in Florida leather absorbs so much sweat it starts to stink pretty quick. Yeah, I sweat a lot, there's a reason I want to move some place dry like Arizona.

The thing I've found with Kydex goes back to the KISS principle. There are a ton of sites on the web that will show you how to make jigs, and set up vacuum shaping units and what not. I use a toaster oven and garden gloves for heating and shaping. Then I use a simple propane torch for spot heating as needed. Also, quite a few sites say you can glue the stuff with PVC glue, but I've seen that fail, use simple rivets; just remember to heat the rivets and pull them to indent them if they might otherwise contact the weapon when drawing and re-holstering.

Belly leather is soft, and won't hold it's shape worth a hoot.

Don't waste your time trying to make a good holster out of it.
