I will be leaving my state tomorrow (Virginia) to see my mom who lives right across the NC state line in Fort Mill, SC. She wants me to bring some of my handguns so she can practice shooting before taking her class and CC test. We will probably spend most of our time in Charlotte, and I know NC honors my Virginia permit.

Question for NC: Can you CC in restaurants serving alcohol? Is NC a must-notify state? Anything else I should watch for?

Question for SC: Since my permit is not honored, and SC is not an open carry state, will I be ok with my guns cased in the trunk upon arriving at my moms and then I can place them in my moms residence? Will I have any problems with the fact that I will have several handguns plus ammo with me? What are the do's and don'ts that I really need to pay attention to?

I really won't be spending any time in SC except the very small driving time from my moms house back into NC. I hate the thought of stopping before entering SC to unload and case my carry weapon for the few mile drive in SC, but I will do what I have to to keep from getting in trouble. Thanks for any info and advice!

Must notify LEO if you have CHP,yes,NC
SC,yes,no problem in trunk or in glove box or console, loaded.Once at Mom's, place them in her home.No problem with handgun numbers or ammo.

Thanks for the answers! I kinda figured on the restaurants, but I didn't know about the notify. SC always scares me for some reason, but good to know I am ok.

What he said.

And to make clear. In SC, resident or not: If you are legally able to own a handgun, it can be condition 1 in your glove box, arm rest or console.

It is called the "Safe Travel" law.

Thanks Winchester! Go Hokies!

Nobius - That is helpful information. Does it have to be locked? Good to know regardless.

No ,the glove box or console does not have to be locked.
SC,overall is gun friendly. The real nitpick is the lack of reciprocity.Only about 12 states recognized.SLED is the problem.
More action is needed to change this.My Florida permit is good for
1,000 miles north to D.C. and Maryland except for South Carolina.

NC also has some wonky laws about not being able to carry inside government buildings, near protests, or to a venue that charges admission like a movie theater. Kinda dumb if you ask me. Their no guns allowed signs also have the force of law behind them.

SC is even worse, no reciprocity with any other states unless you are a resident of those states. Glove box is a nice touch, permit or no permit, but still annoying.

When visiting Mom, keep the handgun on your person. Stop at the border, unholster and pop it into your center console for SC.

Hope this helps!
