So I live in NC right at the border of SC and visit there frequently. My question is can I LEGALLY carry my firearm with me across state lines seeing as how I am not a SC resident? I've been told yes and no and can't really find a definitive answer, hopefully one of y'all can clear this up for me, thanks!

Pistol or long gun? Driving or walking? Loaded or unloaded? Concealed carry permit holder in NC?

More information is necessary before an answer can be provided.

Assuming you mean a handgun, and assuming you have a valid North Carolina concealed carry permit, yes, you can carry in South Carolina, obeying all of SC's laws.

Handgun or long gun either one

Do not have a ccw license but plan on getting one in the next couple months but do have pistol purchase permits.

Will be driving mostly but could I open carry a handgun in sc without a nc ccw or a SC purchase permit? And what about say an unloaded ar in the trunk with ammo kept separate from rifle?

Handgunlaw.us gives a whole lot of very good info about carrying in SC.

OpenCarry.org is another good resource: http://www.opencarry.org/state-info-n-s/south-carolina/

And a quote:
South Carolina is not a traditional open carry state. You may not even open carry with a SC permit. However, you may carry a loaded firearm in the glove box or console of your vehicle while traveling and to and from your accomodations.

And here's a good summary of SC's general firearms laws which should tell you more about possession of rifles when out and about:

From the link I provided above:

Open Carry of a handgun is illegal in South Carolina. Even those with a valid permit/license to carry a concealed firearm can’t legally open carry.

And:

Anyone who can legally own a firearm can carry it loaded if contained in a closed Glove Box, Console, Trunk or a vehicle without a trunk in the Luggage Area in a container secured with fasteners. Their law is very specific on the only locations where it can be carried. Section 16-23-10. Definitions. When used in this article:

(1) “Handgun” means any firearm designed to expel a projectile and designed to be fired from the hand, but shall not include any firearm generally recognized or classified as an antique, curiosity, or collector’s item, or any that does not fire fixed cartridges.

(10) “Luggage compartment” means the trunk of a motor vehicle which has a trunk; however, with respect to a motor vehicle which does not have a trunk, the term “luggage compartment” refers to the area of the motor vehicle in which the manufacturer designed that luggage be carried or to the area of the motor vehicle in which luggage is customarily carried. In a station wagon, van, hatchback vehicle, truck, or sport utility vehicle, the term “luggage compartment” refers to the area behind the rearmost seat.
You may wish to take a few minutes and read the rest of the summary posted at handgunlaw.us: http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/southcarolina.pdf
